Dell problem is right. Try these two things. Reset your video card, and your memory this should work if it doesnt then replace the video card. If this helped please rate thank you.

Go to the control panel and check your power settings. You probably have something set up for monitor off when plugged in ti 120 volts.

My monitor shuts down after one second.

Dell monitors automatically go into power-save mode after a preset amount of time when the computer is inactive. The Dell monitor will go completely black, instead of showing a screensaver. This doesn't mean that your Dell computermag-glass_10x10.gif has shut down. Instead, this allows your monitor to essentially turn off until it's needed again. You can change how long it is before the Dell monitor goes into power-save mode by changing your display settings.
  1. Step 1 Press any key on your keyboard or move your mouse. Either will turn off power-save mode. Alternately, you can press the power button on your Dell computer tower or laptop.
  2. Step 2 Press any key a second time if the monitor goes from power-save to stand-by mode. Stand-by mode allows the screensaver to appear.
  3. Step 3 Enter your user name and password into the login prompt if your computer requires a login. Press "Enter" to begin using your Dell computer.
  4. Step 4 Change the display settings on your Dell monitor to prevent your monitor from going into power-save mode prematurely. Right-click anywhere on your desktop and choose "Properties." Click the "Screensaver" tab and press "Power." Beside "Turn off Monitor," choose a time amount from the drop-down list and press "Apply."

Dell inspiron 1150 laptop black screen

Can you hear the Windows startup noises but can't hear it?

Does it work plugged into an external monitor? (Any good CRT or flat screen should work.

Be sure to plug in the screen before you turn it on.
If it doesnt output to the LCD automatically you may have to hit FN-F8 to switch to external.

If it works on external monitor you are just dealing with a screen problem of some sort - either a bad inverter or backlight in the LCD most commonly...

Wide vertical black and white bands

Hi, You may want to try and unplugging the power and video connectors of the Dell monitor. Check for anything out of the ordinary with the AC plug and the video connector. If none, plug them back in making sure that they are snug and fitted properly. If problem persist, see if it is possible to rotate the way the AC plug is connected to the mains (sometimes this works and can be done if you are not using 3-prong or the uneven 2-prong AC plug. Sometimes, this can also be done on the other end of the AC plug). Check your docking station (though unlikely but possibly). If still a no go and your laptop works ok, then your external monitor needs some looking at. This would involve circuit analysis and component level repair. Perhaps your best bet is to have a qualified professional take a look at it. Good luck and pls post back how things turn up or if you need further information. Kind regards.
