Question about IBM ComCentral 33.6K (7852032) Modem

Open Question

33.6k Modem always picks up the line after repaired.

My modem was damaged by a lightning strike. I took it to be repaired at a computer service shop.

After it was repaired, whenever I plug a phone line into it, it always picks up the line and never hang up. So, I have to unplug it and when I want it to dial, I have to plug it everytime. It works but I am upset with the tech guy who fix my mdoem.

Every fax modem features seems to work ok with its software but the modem cannot detect dial tone and a voice message that I hear from a "local access" feature was not as loud as normal.

Here are my summary of the problems.

1. Modem always picks up the line whenever I plug it in both "Line" and "Phone" connectors.
2. Modem cannot detect dial tone.
3. Voice message is not loud as normal.
4. The "Phone" and "Line" connectors at the back of the modem seem to swap each duty.

I took 2 photos of the PCB (front and back) for you to see which parts I see that were replaced. I would like you to comment on it and suggest me how to fix this problem by myself before taking it to the service guy.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.
goodluck!

SOURCE: I don't know if the think pad has an internal modem.

The T20 has a modem built in, Look on the side, not the back. Look for the port with the phone icon. It will have only 2 center contacts, vs the ethernet port which is a bit wider, and will have 8 contacts.

Modem connection

From Page 68 of the CF19 Reference Manual:

Modem 68
<only for model with internal modem>
CAUTION
?? Do not use the PBX internal phone lines installed in company offices. Doing so may lead to a fire or electric shock.
?? You cannot connect the modem to the following lines.
• Interphone
• Intercoms
• ISDN
?? Be sure to connect the telephone cable into the modem port, not into the LAN port.
?? Use a surge protector since the modem may be damaged by a sudden high voltage surge that may occur in the event
of a lightning strike.
1 Open the cover and connect the telephone jack (A) to the computer
by using the telephone cable (included) (B).
?? Hold the cable so that the shape of the connector (C) matches the port, and
insert fully until it clicks.
2 Click [start] - [Control Panel] - [Printers and Other Hardware] -
[Phone and Modem Options] and change the settings as necessary.
NOTE
?? Do not enter standby or hibernation during communications.
?? To remove the cable, press and hold the lever and pull out.

This is everything about the modem.
Good Luck

Lightning strike near house. Power surge came through phone line and ethernet cable. lost modem, computer, time machine, house security system, and HP Officejet 6310xi. When printer is connected to power...

From your description the HP printer is damaged beyond repair, when a lightning strike occurs it also went through the power supply affecting the main board and destroying ic's and other parts. It is more than likely the interface cord from the computer to the printer also took a jolt hitting the printer from both sides finishing off any chance of recovery, you would be further ahead replacing the item.

My mother was told that she has a short in her modem can this be fixed or should i replace the modem

While each case is different (depending on which component has shorted in the modem), most are the diode or protective capacitors with problems.

From a cost and time standpoint of view, you can get an internal PCI modem from about $19.95 or so, and I have even seen them as low as $14 or $9 at times. When they come into the shop, most modems are usually gone so bad (especially from surge or lightning damage) that the best option is to always replace it.

My 2003 server sees the modem v.92 fax, but i can not seem to use it. I tryed to reset it, powered off and back on, reinitialized it but nothing seems to work.

A lightning strike to the phone line can kill the line interface while the computer interface is still ok. This would produce the symptoms you describe. If you can open the modem, look around the phone line connector for burnt components or burning on the board.

This might also stop the phone line from working when the modem is connected, ie another phone on the same line will produce no dial tone with themodem connected.

If this is the case a new modem will be the cheapest way out of this.

Cant get into 192.168.1.1 to fix problem

Do you have cable or DSL internet service? On a DSL setup the router is at 192.168.2.1 . At the run command, ipconfig/all will give all the current settings of your network connection. The line with default gateway is your router address.

Check the status lights on your router and modem as well as the network connection on your computer. You may want to try connecting to the modem itself with a wired connection and then reconnect the router and see if you can connect with a wired connection from the computer to the router.

If your network works normally with a wired connection, use the device manager to check your wireless connection. Also go through the router setup to check that no settings have been changed.

If you have missing lights on either the modem or the router, check the cables (replace them if you can) and transformers. A call for service from your ISP may be needed if the modem isn't connecting. (At least once, my DSL network went down after a lightning strike damaged the signal filter where the DSL split from the phone line.)

I hope this helps.

(I have an older router that does not give a local area connection if it loses the WAN from the modem.)

if there is a problem with the line, it would be better if you would call your internet service provider for the said concern.

My modem power is not on. any ideas?

This is just a guess because I can't test it but I'll bet it got zapped by lightning. (A strike hundreds of miles away can do this) Try it in a different computer and/or phone line. If it still fails, it's gone.

Lightning

Hi,

In a nutshell, yes and not only to a Dell but to most computer brands/models. In some instances, it's only the modem, router, LAN card that gets fried while some gets everything toasted.

Incidentally, even a near lightning strike is enough to cause big problems.

Kind regards.
