Question about Brother MFC-9440CN Laser Printer

1 Answer

Voicemail is not kicking in most of the time

As fax is on the same line. Phone company doesn't offer a ''distinctive ring''. I really don't want to set it on manual and have to answer it all the time nor do I want to go back to an answering machine. Any other ideas? Thanks.

Interesting. How was it that the answering machine worked for you? You should be able to configure your voicemail to pickup earlier, but it would pickup fax calls as well. Separate line is the only other solution other than a device that would automatically route the calls to fax when needed.

There is a function in the users manual that talks about the ring delay. You may adjust this and it may help with your issue. If you have no user manual, you can download it for free from the companies website under downloads.

How to receive a fax

Check if the auto answer is turned on. Also, check the ring pattern if it is set to Auto. If this is a shared line with your phone and you have an answering machine, set your fax to pick up 5 rings higher than your answering machine.

If you have a voicemail service, you'll need to get a distinctive ring feature from your phone company for it to work.

Fax won't answer

If you have an answering machine connected to the same line as your fax:

To make sure the printer picks up incoming faxes, set Auto Answer to On, and then set the printer to pick up after a greater number of rings than the answering machine. For example, if the answering machine picks up calls after four rings, then set the printer to pick up after six rings. This way, the answering machine picks up calls first and your voice calls are received. If the call is a fax, then the printer detects the fax signal on the line and takes over the call.

If you have a voicemail feature associated to the same line as your fax:

Voice mail and fax can share the same telephone line if you subscribe to a distinctive ring service offered by your telephone company. This feature allows you to have multiple telephone numbers on one telephone line. Each telephone number has a designated ring pattern (single ring, double ring, triple ring, or double and triple ring). The different ring patterns let you know which telephone number was dialed, and which device you should use to answer the call.

If you do not have distinctive ring service, then set the printer to receive faxes manually (Auto Answer Off). This setting lets you receive both voice calls and fax calls, but works best if you use voice mail more often. You need to turn off voice mail whenever you are expecting a fax.

I hope this helps.

MY X5650 WILL SEND FAXES BUT NOT RECIEVE THEM

Are you sharing your home phone line with your fax? If so, do you have a voicemail or an answering machine connected in the same line?

If you have an answering machine connected to the same line as the fax, set the answering machine to answer incoming calls before the printer does. Increase the number of rings by a factor of 3 over the answering machine. For example, if the answering machine is set to pick up on 4 rings, set the printer to pick up on 7 rings.

If you have a voicemail feature in the same line as the fax, you may subscribe from your phone service provider for a distinctive ring pattern feature. You can program your printer to have a distinctive ring pattern and phone number for incoming faxes.

It will only automatically pick up the line when set to "fax". You need to subscribe to a "distinctive" ring (which is a double ring) service through your telephone company and set the rings to answer appropriately so as to not conflict with your voicemail

I am trying to setup answering data and fax on the same phone line. What setting do you use to isolate data vs voice for incoming calls and either the fax pick up or the phone call go to a voicemail? JC

Order "distinctive ring" from your telephone-company.

One style of "ring" can be routed to the FAX,
and the other style of "ring" can be routed to voice-mail.

The fax is on what you call a Distinctive Ring tone. You need to go in to the settings on the fax machine, and look for Ring type, or Distinctive Ring, And set it to 2 or 3, Dependent on how the phone rings on the fax number.
