Question about GE Profile 26.6 cu. ft. Side-by-Side Refrigerator with Dispenser TFX27PRBWW

1 Answer

GE TFX27R SBS refrig too cold

I'm really getting stumped on this one. The refrig and freezer are both too cold (refrigerator is in the 20's all the time). I've replaced the thermostat and no change. The controls seem to make no difference. I can't make it any warmer. It runs nearly continuously. The damper attached to the freezer control knob is okay and working. I'm assuming (maybe wrongly) that since it cools too well that it is not low on freon. Any help would be greatly appreciated. One specific question: the thermocouple on the thermostat is coiled within an inch of the thermostat body. I left it this way. Should I have stretched it out or repositioned it?

Thanks jgwhomeequip. That makes sense. Can you give me a hint where I would find the relay?! Thanks.

Thanks again. I'll replace it and see if that does the trick.

Solved the problem!! A local service wizard told me about a tiny adjustment screw on the thermostat in a hole right next to the knob shaft. It can be accessed by simply removing the knob. I turned the screw 3/4 turn clockwise and now the thermostat controls like it is supposed to. Setting it to 5 puts the refrigerator side at about 38 - 40 degrees and the freezer, set on C is at about 10 deg. By the way, I determined that the relay was good simply by noting that the compressor turned off when I turned the thermostat to Off. If the relay were bad, it would not control the compressor.

To answer your question that is how the coil is supposed to be wrapped. Just because the unit stays really cold has nothing to do with low freon. Low freon you would ice up and the system would be warm. This sounds like your really is bad and needs to be replaced, due to the fact that nothing is telling the copressor to shut down. This is how it works. The thermostat sends a signal to the thermocouple, which in return sends a signal to the relay which sends a signal to the compressor to run or stop. If the relay goes bad it will let the compressor run all the time. Please rate if you are satisfied

Ye, not a problem. The relay is located right next to the compressor on the back of the machine. It is screwed on the side of the fridge

Vegetables in crisper are frozen, as well as liquids in bottom 1/2 of fridge door. The fridge & freezer temp controls won't adjust to our settings. Also, we're getting ice, but no water will dispense.

The freezer cools the refrigerator, so you actually get very cold air passing from the freezer to the refrig. The air from the freezer enters the refrig on the top and falls to the bottom where it is drawn back into the freezer. The temperature of the refrig is regulated by a thermostat and a fan that runs when the thermostat calls for cooling. If the refrig thermostat is faulty and causes the fan to run more than it should, there will be a freezing problem in the refrig at the bottom because cold air falls and warm air rises. If the refrig is thermostat is calling for cooling constantly, this will take more cold air from the freezer than is normal. Your freezer temp might be higher than normal and the refrig will be colder then desired. If the fan from the freezer is running constantly I would suspect a bad refrig thermostat.

Have ge gt mdl# gts22jbpbrww. the freezer is cold but the refrig is not getting cold. I took apart the cover showing me the freezer fan and it is not working could this be why the refrig is not getting...

Yes, if the fan is not forcing the cold air from the freezer section to the refrigerator section, then it will be warmer than it should be. Also check to make sure that the cooling tubes aren't blocked with frost/ice. If you put a hair dryer to the cooling tube openings you should feel the air flow on the other side.

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

The ideal temp for the freezer is around 10 degrees F.
Look at the evaporator coils behind the rear cover inside the freezer and check the ice forming on the coils.

GE side by side refrigerator TFX22ZRA control board

The adaptive defrost on your model is controled by the motherboard, but I don't think that is your problem. If the freezer is too cold and the fresh foods is too warm, check the air dampener. It is a small duct door in the very back top left of the fresh foods section.

Side by side refrig./freezer does not cold.

Are the heat exchange coils behind or under the refrigerator clean?
Are the fans running smoothly? Check for bent blades and bend them back if necessary.
Is the evaporating pan under the refrigerator dry.? Then the drain of the defroster may be blocked. Unblock with a steam generator or a long plastic tube.
