The subject line says it all: I have a MacBook Pro and am shopping for a camcorder that interfaces as nicely as possible with iMovie. I had a Sony Handycam DCR SR40 with HDD and could not get it to connect well at all. So I sold it and am now in the market.
Well, for a really very neat, handy, low cost, pocket size little point and shoot candidate, with not at all bad video performance actually, there's the RCA Small Wonder.
[Battery powered (2 AAA's), very simple user interface, modest zoom capability, 30 minutes recording time on the internal memory, a built-in fold-out USB connector that plugs right into your laptop, and no memory cards or cable ports of any kind except a mini stereo jack that lets it play directly into a TV. About $100 on the shelf at our local hardware store.]

"Not connect well" means thatwhen linked via the USB cable it came with to the MacBook Pro, iMovie could not open the MPEG MOvie files,. Attempts to use Quicktime met with an error message. I didn't say there was a "fault" in the camcorder but the incompatibility was the problem.A friend with a MiniDV camcorder tried my computer out and found no such problems.
I ventured a previous posting and also spoke with both Apple and Sony who could not help make the two machines work together. This was over a two month period. Bottom line was that after two months of trying various software and cable options it didn't click. I see nothing short siughted about it but I guess one comes to expect that any posting will always draw in someone who enjoys reproaching the OP for some reason. Probably some lack of maternal bonding...

You might want to consider 1080i HD camcorders now. You can archive video now and create hidef (HD? BluRay?) DVDs when they become more affordable. Or just use the low def option for now which will allow for quicker input into your system. I have the Sony HDR-HC7 and like it. It does ok in low light and performs very well with external mics and manual gain control.
