Battery Not Charging

Hello,
I have a Dell Insipron 640m. When I connect the charger to my laptop it runs fine on AC Power but it doesn't charge the battery. I get a message that says "Your system will operate slower and the battery will not charge. Please connect a Dell 65W AC adapter or higher for best system opertation". Please note I am using the same charger that came with the laptop since i bought it 2 years ago.
Thank you for your help!

Hi there
The battery has probably just degraded and needs replacing.
Worst case scenario is that the power board that controls battery charging has gone, that will mean that it could be an expensive repair.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Dell Xps 15 Laptop Battery Not Charging

If your battery will not charge, you need to run a test on some components on the laptop. The battery, the charger and the laptop itself. Once you detect the faulty conponent then you replace it with a new one.

To test the battery:
1.Power off the laptop,
2.Take out the battery,
3.Insert it in another laptop,
4.Check of it will charge,

If the battery holds a charge there, then it means the problem is not from the battery, but if it does not hold a charge, then it means the battery is defective and need to be replaced with a new one.

To test the charger:
1.Unplug the charger from the present laptop,
2.Connect it to another laptop to see if it will charge.

If it charges the laptop, then it means the charger is alright, and if it does not charge the laptop, then it means the charger is bad and need to be replaced.

To test the laptop:
1.Turn off the laptop,
2.Disconnect your present charger,
3.Remove your present battery pack,
4.Insert a well tested battery into the laptop,
5.Connect a well tested charger to the laptop.

If it powers on, then it and charges, then it means the laptop is working fine, but if it does not charge, then it means the connection port of the laptop is bad.Hope this information was helpful.

Dell 1737 - Battery plugged in not charging. No one has a solution, only suggestions. New battery, new charger. I don't believe this is a motherboard issue. I believe this is a problem with the OS,...

Hi swd6,

Just to isolate the issue, could you kindly remove the battery from your laptop and using the AC adapter alone charge the machine. Please let me know if it's charging.

Thank you for using FixYa.

My dell 640M doesn't run on AC mains power but runs fine with battery power. So what could be the problem? Thanks.

A bad or weak adapter. It will charge the battery when off but won't run the laptop by itself. Also it could be a bad power jack where it plugs in.I would try a good adapter first to see.

My Dell Laptop syas that my battery is charged. But when I remove the ac power cord the computer immediately shuts down.

Hi there,

I repair laptops professionally and work on many Dells. Here are the possibilities.

1. The plugin connection where the battery meets the charging contacts in its bay where it seats are malfucntioning and the software is reading it incorrectly. To see if this is so, push the small round black button on the battery next to the 5 little dots at one end. If none of those dots light up green, the battery has no charge and the connection I spoke of above is damaged or malfunctioning beyond where you can see. If all the dots light up green, the battery is likely fine but the laptop can;t connect to its charge at the plugin.

2. The basic software (BIOS) is reading the charger/adapter incorrectly and although saying it is charging or charged, the actual charger is ruined inside in the compartment for charging the battery. Dell chargers can actually be incapable of charging the battery but still run the computer on direct current while plugged in.

3. The battery is no longer able to be charged, but is giving a false reading.

4. The DC Power Jack (into which you plug the charger) is only partially damaged and while able to power the laptop directky, cannot charge the battery. (Check to see if it is loose and woobly when you plug in the charger.

The easiest and least expensive way to troubleshoot and fix this yourself is to start with the charger. They can be had on eBay for about $20. Keep in mind that if no green lights show up on the battery, it might be your first choice and it's about the same price.

I hope I've given you enough info the help you determine your true problem.

Regards,

The Selkie

Hello my laptop isn't charging properly. It is plugged in and all of the cables are connected. There is power in the plug socket but it doesn't seem to be charging. Help!

Hi! Drain the power charges of the laptop by shutting it down and by unplugging both ac adapter (charger) and battery from the computer.

Press the power button for like 10 times while the battery and charger is disconnected to drain the power of the board.

connect back the battery first then connect the charger to the computer. Make sure that the charger is connected to a stable power outlet while charging the system.

Please leave a comment if you have any other questions.

Cheers!

Dell inspirion 6000 battery/charging problem

Also, check to make sure that you have a good connection between the laptop and the charging cable at the power port on the rear of the laptop. We have an Inspirion 6000 with this problem and we've discovered if you pull the power cord out very slightly and lift it upwards, the charging icon appears in the system tray. Appears to be a fractured connection inside the laptop at the power port. Changing chargers does not make any difference.
