**presuming** this is a horizontal, very thin line right in the center of the tube, and sometimes the picture is ok, then the vertical circuitry has one or more bad solder joints.

A ***QUALIFIED TECH*** needs to resolder the joints in this area. This is not a beginner soldering job. Special care must take place to avoid electrical shock or WORSE!! seriously.

that silver box is called TV tuner (see picture ) ............ but in your case that is not the problem ......... after 4 or 5 yrs (depending on usuage ) in some TVs on mainboard & CRT tube's circuit board at some soldering joints cracks develops ... then due to loose contact TV behaves as you have described ........ when you are hitting that lightly on its side then these cracks at soldering joints are getting connected temporarly & for few seconds or minutes you are getting normal picture ....... so solution is most of the soldering joints on mainboard & on CRT circuit board has to be resoldered ....... only good tv service engineer can do this without shorting joints or damaging components..... so that silver box ( TV tuner ) is not the problem because when it gets deffective then you will get picture that comes when tv is switched on ---- usually it will be blue screen ......& also if you connect dvd you will get picture normally ...only thing is that you won't get picture from cable or antenna .............. vishnuswamy_25.jpg

Model 32A40. Picture periodically reduces to one narrow horizontal line. Becoming more frequent. Does this mean picture tube is going. What might potential repair cost be? thanks in advance.

No it is not a tube problem .............hit your TV on left side or right side or on top & then observe ..........you will get normal picture or it comes & again it goes....if it is happening like that then following is the situation..........after 4 or 5 yrs in some TVs on main board ( also on CRT circuit board ) at some soldering joints crack develops....then due to loose contact picture becomes small in size or abnormal width, or rolls etc ...........when we hit that lightly then those loose contacts joins temporarly & again picture appears normally for some time............so solution is .....TV main board & CRT circuit board should be observed carefully & most of the joints should be re-soldered.......only a good service engineer can do that........even after hitting TV lightly if there is no response then main board has to be checked completely........in your case iam sure it is loose connection problem.........joints should be re - soldered ...100% it works again ................this problem cannot be solved by user unless user has idea about components( resisitors, transisitors, diodes,...etc) , have soldering iron , multimeter & other tools....................so contact good TV service engineer & just ask him to resolder joints .............iam from bangalore - computers, laptop, printers, etc ) ----- good TV service engineer will charge less .........

No Picture on Toshiba 42RV530U

I had a similar problem to this yesterday. Tv is same Toshiba model as you mentioned about 4 months old. In my case, after the TV working perfectly following installation, the standby LED on the front (the one that is red on standby and green when on) went to a flashing orange (after switching on from standby) and the picture disappeared although the sound remained OK. I was unable to get any response from the setup or menu on the remote, otherwise I would have tried resetting the TV. Regardless of how much switching off/on (including disconnecting the powerlead and leaving for few minutes), disconnecting all peripherals, etc., nothing helped. I looked up Toshiba's web site and under support they basically suggest switching off the TV and restarting using the onset buttons (not the remote) and pressing the menu button (again the one on the set (not the remote) and if you could get the menu box to appear then reset to default settings. I tried this but the results were the same. I therefore thought the TV was defective. However, after much frustration I did the following (I think): 1) Disconnect everything from the TV 2) Powered up from the mains switch whilst keeping BOTH the startup and menu buttons on the side of the TV pressed down. The result in my case was that the standby led and one of the two beside it flashed green simultaneously. However, when the buttons were released, the TV started up the same (flashing LED orange and sound no picture). 3) Pretty well defeated at this point, after doing the procedure at (2) several times with the same results, I somehow thought of pressing the standby button on the remote either whilst the two buttons on the set were depressed or just after they were released. I am afraid I cannot remember which and cannot replicate the problem as I don't know what caused it in the first place. 4) The TV then started normally ( no reception as I had not aerial connected, etc.,) but I was able to gain access to the screen menu/setup buttons via the remote which were in French rather than English. However, after reconnecting everyrthing the TV has worked fine (obviously after resetting the language via the menu). I am sorry I cannot be more precise but I hope this might be of help to someone with a similar problem.
