Question about GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Microwave Oven

1 Answer

The microwave stopped heating. Everything else is working fine.

I turned the microwave on to defrost some meat. It ran fine, everything was working, i.e., clock, light, turntable, fan, etc. except it didn't heat and did not defrost. It hasn't worked since. Its a GE Spacemaker JVM1630WJ03, April 2006. If it can not be fixed, I need instructions on how to remove and replace it.

Same issue as above. Everything seems to be working fine, but nothing is getting cooked.

  • Anonymous Feb 12, 2009

I have same problem, it happened all the sudden. It worked great the evening before, went to heat up something for breakfast next morn. and just heard a humm about twice as loud as normal(but not crazy loud) and NO heat! but everything else worked fine, the control panel, lights, turntable, etc. I have basic common sense/knowledge in electrical for appliances, very well versed in high and low voltage automation systems and small electronics. With that being said i had hoped to be guided in the right direction from this forum. I plan on digging into this and let you all know what i find. It seems to be a VERY common problem. In this time in all or lives it would be very cool to be self sufficient.

Yes, we have the EXACT same problem.

This morning , I went to heat my food and there was a change in sound,a larger humm started and then the food did not heat. I have tried moving it places but it still did not heat the food.

Every thing else works, time, clock...

    what could be the problem?

I have a GE Profile Spacemaker XL 1800. Everything works but it has stopped heating. Is it fixable or does it need to be replaced?

GE MAGNETRON REPLACEMENT

With the symptoms you have, I would most strongly suspect a shorted high voltage rectifier diode or a bad magnetron, or a loose and possibly corroded connection on the magnetron's terminal.

The diode is a fairly cheap fix, and your magnetron is still under the part warranty, but you would have to pay labor.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical safety information and disassembly information at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa.

There should be a "mini-manual" (tech sheet) hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting, testing, and locating components.

The microwave stopped heating. Everything else is - d:%5cele%5crepair%5cmicrowave%5cge_hotpoint%5cmini_manual_behind_grille_small.jpgdee77f7.jpg

At our Web site, we have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

Here are some links you or someone you know can use for test help, but read their safety warnings first:

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/diode.html
(if it's not shorted or burned, it's probably okay)

http://www.gallawa.com/microtech/mag_test.html

Since it's within the magnetron portion of the warranty (5-9 years) but out of the original full warranty (1 year), G.E. will cover the part cost, but not the cost to visit you or the labor charge to do the work.

Sometimes they will send you the magnetron to do it yourself.

If nothing else, you can save about $50-75 if you remove it from the wall and take it to a GE-authorized servicer.

You can find a GE-authorized servicer by calling GE Appliance Service at 1-800-848-7620 or here.

Accessing some components for testing and possible replacement will require you to remove the oven from the wall.

If so, the installation instructions are very handy, and it's best to have two people since the microwave can be heavy and awkward.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

The microwave stopped heating. Everything else is working fine.

Ok, concerning the heating issue. you will need to replace the Magnetron to restore the heating feature in this unit. this device is damaged.

Concerning the motor(circulation). If the motor is not working, this will damaged the Magnetron, due to poor circulation. i recommend replacing the motor asap.

In conclusion, you will need to replace the Magnetron and the circulation motor as well. replacing these two vital devices will fix your issues. the total cost for these parts are estimated at $87.90

Everything appears to work fine but it is not heating anymore.

If the microwave oven appears to be working but it is not heating the food, it is very possible that the magnetron, or its power supply has failed.

Everything works except the cooking part/no heating/turntable not turning, help!

you may have gotten a power surge and that can cause some funny things to happen, 1st is there power to the oven, 2nd if so there may be an internal fuse protector built in to the oven, check with the manual for anything of that sort listed. if not you may have to take it in and have it repaired by a pro. there is a lot of voltage in these ovens and unless you know what you are doing a person could get hurt

Ge microwave won't heat everything else works fine

Hello t_sumner4756,
Everything else can work perfectly fine but if it doesn't generate microwaves to heat your food than it is not working ( you knew that anyway).. Unfortunately, and in most cases when you microwave stops working in that manner..the components at fault are either the Magnetron, Filament PS or a High Voltage Capacitor..What that means is that you are probably better off just replacing the entire appliance rather than attempting to repair it. If it is a year old or less, bring it back to where you purchased it and have them replace it.. I am sure that is not what you wanted to hear but when the cost to repair exceeds the cost to replace... it just isn't worth repairing.. Plus.. there is an element of danger associated with these kinds of repairs...

Rick
