How do I check the compressor, relay and computer board? What am I "looking" or listening for?

  • Anonymous Feb 12, 2009

I have the same problem as you do. On top of that, there is a clicking sound and the alarm is sounding off every now and then. I have the fridge for under 8 years. Is the problem worthy to be repaired or is it better for me to just get a new fridge?

Thanks! It was the relay. I was going to test it myself but then didn't know where to get parts, etc. so we just had someone over to do it. Compressor was fine, it was just the relay that took a dump.

Check your compressor, the relay and the computer board. These are all located at the back of the fridge if all check out ok, then check your thermostat

The compressor is really easy, turn the unit on to full, and put your hand on the compressor if it is moving your hand will vibrate. The relay needs to be checked with a volt meter you should see 24 volts. if less then 24 like 15 replace. To check the thermostat, remove the temperature control dial 2 screws, remove the plugs going to the thermostat, place a jumper wire on them and test voltage with the dial turned on full. If you get 24 volts it is good. les then it needs to be replace. These are the only 3 problems that will cause your unit to do this and I did not mean to say computer board, I meant thermostat

Freezer is working, but fridge is warm. Fan in back of fridge will not shut off.

If your fridge is not designed with an automatic de-icing function, then there may be an ice dam blocking the cold air from moving from the freezer to the fridge. I had a fridge once that would get blocked with ice even if the rest of the freezer was ice-free.

Unplug your unit (often shutting off the breaker is easier than digging behind the fridge for the plug).

Pull everything out of the freezer and put it in a box. Cover the box completely with blankets to insulate it so your food doesn't thaw and spoil. Prop open the freezer door and let any ice accumulation melt.

Once everything has thawed out, wipe up the water and plug the unit back in. You should be able to tell after 10 minutes or so whether the fridge is getting cooler or not.

During heavy frost everything froze solid even drainage pipe. I notice that my freezer (top half) is not cooling at all. All food has gone soggy. Fridge is just cool. Will it right itself once kitchen...

It's possible the unit is not working correctly as it expects the air temperature to be around 18 degrees centigrade. If too cold, they can go into a defrost cycle.

If your food is not cold enough - but your room is frozen - can you pack your freezer items in snow? Alternatively, move the unit to a warmer area.

Sounds strange - but modern units don't work well in the cold !

Make sure this fan is running. You may have to hold the door switch in for it to run. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp.
The problem could be the electronic control if you have one or the mechanical linkages.

Neither refrigerator nor freezer cooling.

sounds like the compressor or relay went out. if the compressor is hot turn off and let cool to room temp. and try it then [a few hours] , if it is not hot then replace the relay on the compressor.

The freezer stops working when the room temp drops below 60

Refrigerator operation is controlled by the internal temperature . When there is very little ambient heat available to leak in to cause it to cycle more frequently and there is no door traffic to be a heat source the freezer temperature will increase. Keep the room heated to a higher temperature or remove frozen products is the answer. A small chest type freezer will keep food frozen while you are away and have the heat turned down.

Freezer works great, as it should, but fridge is only keeping items room temp. I have the setting at the coldest setting: #7. What is wrong?

Here's what I did, I defrosted! I found out that the fridge temp is monitored and maintained by the freezer. Because we had a power outage one night, my freezer thawed while we all slept and then when power came back on, freezer re-froze but this cause an ice build up on the vent on the back wall of the freezer. Well, ice must have been in one (or more) vents, causing blocked air flow in my top half of the refrigerator. I turned the dial in the freezer to "off" which also shuts down power to the fridge half. I then unplugged the refrigerator, hauled all my food items into coolers, opened the freezer door and refrigerator doors and left them open for a little over six hours. I took advantage of this empty fridge and freezer and wiped everything down. After this time frame passed, I plugged the fridge back in, turned the freezer dial to my preferred freezer temp, and wah-lah! Within two hours I had a cold fridge and solid ice cubes in the freezer. I then put all my food items back into their appropriate compartments, and went to work. Bear in mind, a total 24-hour period is needed for the fridge to re-set itself, but still, after two hours the fridge was noticeably cold. Who knew, besides our parents' generation: DEFROST!

Bottom mount freezer not getting cold enough

You have a failed component or components in your automatic defrost system. This is why you have excessive frost inside the freezer along the back wall. The timer could be stuck in run mode. The defrost thermostat (bi-metal) could be defective or the defrost heater could be open or shorted.
