Question about Kenmore Elite HE4 Electric Dryer

1 Answer

HE4 model 110.85872400 no heat but runs. Proper voltage at outlet

THe dryer started running and continues to add time in any mode, but there is no presence of heat. It is just about 2 years old and we run a lot of laundry with a family of 12. Any help would be appreciated.

If this is not heating should I check contacts for current at the same time and replace the elements?

Check in the back of the unit and make sure that the elements are heating up and glowing red, this is the way that the clothes dry. You will ned to remove the back panel or tilt it up very high so you can see under the dryer

Yes, exactly sounds like you know how to do this if I am correct just make sure that you do not do this while it is plugged in

I have a kenmore quietpak 9 dryer model 110.85866400, the dryer blows air but does not heat, how do I repair it?

ELECTRIC Dryer no heat or little heat:

Check your venting and lint basket. Check blower for lint build up and blower wheel obstruction., test by trying to turn the wheel manually by hand (should be easy) May have to remove cabinet or front/back plate to get to it)

Next check the heating element itself with a meter for continuity OHMS CLOSED CIRCUIT. If not its defective.

Check dryer Terminal block prongs both outside prongs should give combined 220, and 110 each if u check 1 outside & 1 center (ground) prong. Also check house electrical outlet for full voltage. 220 because if u only get half or 110 volts you will be able to run the machine which uses only 110 to run motor but not the heater which uses a full 220,

Check the thermal cut off, the cycling and the hi limit thermostats.
For continuity or OHMS. If no ohms or resistance they need replacement.

Lastly check your moister sensor. ( located inside the dryer door usually) Especially if machine seems to shut down early and clothes are still wet.
Test with a meter at room temperature and it should show continuity.

Dryer starts but no heat. Am I correct in assuming heating element is the only problem?

Its usually not the element
Check 220 voltage at wall it will run on 110 but not heat
Check breaker
Check thermal fuse at top of element case in back
2 wires
But check element anyhow

you have a short somewhere,is it gas or elecric?if it's electric try starting it with no heat, you might have a direct short to the heater, also check to make sure you have the correct voltage to the outlet, the problem could be in the house and not the dryer, send model number next time

The first thing is to look at your tech manual and do a continuity test on the thermistor.

Dryer won't heat

The voltage first a unit needs 220v to heat but only 110v to run check for proper voltage at the plug first

CHECK FOR 240 VOLTS AT DRYER ELEMENT WITH DRYER
RUNNING IN HEAT CYCLE. IF NO VOLTAGE, CHECK WALL
OUTLET FOR 240 VOLTS BETWEEN LEFT AND RIGHT SLOTS IN RECEPTACLE. A DRYER WILL RUN ON 120 VOLTS TO
GROUND BUT WILL NOT HEAT IF 240 VOLTS IS NOT PRESENT. IF THERE IS 240 AT THE OUTLET, START TRACING THROUGH THE HEATER CIRCUIT. LOOK FOR A FAILED THERMOSTAT OR THERMAL FUSE NEAR THE HEATER OR EXHAUST OUTLET. CHECK THEM WITH A CONTINUITY TEST WITH DRYER UNPLUGGED, OR A VOLTAGE CHECK WITH A HOT CIRCUIT.

You wouldn't be trying to **** up to the Guru now, would you? :o)

I have a couple of links for you to look at to see if this can shed some light on your problem.

If your dryer is running, but not heating refer to this link:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r630242-dryer_runs_but_not_heat

If your dryer is not running at all, this link goes into a little more depth about dryer problems and how to diagnose the symptoms:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r385301-thorough_dryer_advice

The first thing you need to do is figure out the symptoms. Keep in mind, the motor operates off 110-120VAC. The heating circuits require 220-240VAC to operate. If you are missing one leg of the 220VAC service at the outlet, the dryer will run, but the heating circuits will not work - double check your outlet first. If your dryer has been running extremely hot, and if you are experiencing longer dry times, you have a ventilation problem you need to resolve. Extremely long ventilation ducting, runs with a lot of bends, or ventilation that runs through an attic or crawl space, can contribute to heating efficiency problems. I would suspect you have a blown thermal fuse (located on the air blower housing - white plastic in color). You will need to remove the lower panel under the door to see it.

If you get confused, please post back and let me know. I hope this helps you.
