D-Link AirPlus DI-524 Wireless Router

Wireless timing out in Ubuntu Feisty (was resizing...

By Phoebe - usenet poster

Hi Robert,

I was able to resize my Windows partition using Knoppix. Thanks for the help.

I have a new challenge however, I am using a D-Link DI-524 AirPlus G
802.11g/2.4Ghz Wireless router and it seems to time out frequently. When I
am disconnected from the web, I am still able to ping the router. Also,
NetworkManager reconnects to the web after a few minutes but it is a real
hassle to be constantly dropped. If I use a wired connection I have know
problems. Aside from this info I don't know where to look to correct the
problem.

Thanks,

Tim Beckendorf

I've not tried lately, but last month I used it just fine with another
router.
The connection via a web browser for some reason does not work anymore.
It is supposed to be accessed by 192.168.0.1 but I receive the error
that the browser can't establish a connection with the server. Is this
yet another indication that my router is fried?

Nope, I bought it two years ago. If I need a new router, can you
recommend one that can stand up to harsh environmental conditions and
can use dual voltage (110/220)? We live and work in Botswana, Africa,
and the office gets rather hot (95+) and stays hot all day long and
there are dust issues.

Thanks,

Tim

The easiest way is to go to a cafe with wifi and see if you can connect
and for how long. If you experience the same problems, maybe it's your
wifi card. If you have no problems, it's likely the D-Link router.

Does this only happen with Ubuntu, or with this machine, or with this
wifi card?

The user guide that came with the router should tell you both how to
find out what the current firmware version is and how to check for
updates. Usually, you can connect to the router via a web browser,
which also would allow you to download the latest firmware and install
it on the router. But each router does things a bit differently. You
may want to contact their tech support as they may know of the issue
right of the bat.

If it is the router giving you problems, can you still return it?

Regards,
- Robert

I've only connected to this router so I don't know if the problem would
occur with another one or not.

I don't know if the router runs the latest firmware or not. How do I find
that out?

The router is a little warm but not hot.

There are no other wireless routers that I've detected in the area.

Thanks for your help,

Tim

Glad to hear that worked.

My suspicions are that the problem is with the D-Link, but that's biased
because of my previous experiences with D-Link.

Some questions:

- Does this happen when you connected to other wifi routers or just this
router?
- Does the router run the latest firmware available for it?
- Is the router sufficiently ventilated or is it hot to the touch?
- Are there other wifi routers in the area on the same channel?

Regards,
- Robert
