I am looking for a 2 or 4 port KVM that won't break my budget. I have
"aquired" an additional computer for my kids and would like to hook it up to
a KVM to share my 19" monitor I use for my computer.
Any suggestions?
Thanks
Brad

If you are in Europe (not sure about the States etc) try Lindy (UK web-site
at #). I'm using their 4 port pro rack-mount version here,
which has been excellent. I use it for switching between server,
workstation, laptop on a PS2 mouse / keyboard Y splitter and customers' PCs
which could be any combination of AT, serial or PS2 keyboards and mice.
What is really good about it is I can swapo channels using my wheel mouse -
hold the wheel in then left click. It saves a lot of reaching for buttons
or remembering key combinations.

This recommendation is correct. I looked around a lot, and I thought that
this was clearly the best value. The Linksys KVM by itself actually costs
only about $35-40, but the cables bring the KIT up to about $67 (what I
paid online). It works like a charm -- no power transformer to connect and
no software to install; just give either CTRL key two quick taps, and all
control is switched to the other computer. I also recommend the KIT as
opposed to buying the switch alone.
(One of the mags reviewed KVM switches a couple of months ago and mentioned
one that included AUDIO. It seemed like a sensible addition, but I could
never find it, and that switch was priced around $180. I have since found
that my (and most) speakers already have an additional input, so I didn't
need that feature anyway.)
Note that the Linksys cables are no more than about 4 feet long if that.
They are meant for two PCs that are almost side by side. If you need
longer cables, you can configure your own with extenders, but the cables
that come with the Linksys kit are really nice -- each set of three is
bundled into one larger cable to prevent clutter. Linksys just might sell
longer cables; check their Web site.

I'm using a D-Link DKVM-2 2 port switch - works fine although I did have a
problem with it using an MS Natural Pro Keyboard into a Dell Lattitude
notebook.
Worked fine directly into the Dell & worked fine via the KVM into my Athlon
1.33 desktop so the Dell is OK, The Kbd is OK & so is the KVM - but the MS
Kbd + the KVM + the Dell = screwed up . Kept doubling up on Characters so if
I typed "and" I'd occasionally get "aand" or "annd". Happened at random but
frequently enough to be very irritating! Swapped the MS Kbd for a Logitech &
all is now fine.
Otherwise nice piece of kit and not too expensive as these things go

I am looking for a 2 or 4 port KVM that won't break my budget.

REPLIED
I got my daughter a Linksys 2-port KVM about a year ago she's been
very happy with it
So has another newsgroup poster that I recommended this model to
recently.

Multi-wave - (mwave.com) - has this kit for $79. -
--
NOTE:
This is a kit it comes with cables most KVM don't.
--
I use a "Bytelan" 4-port myself it's made by Protec.
It's very nice... but it cost about $180 at Tiger-Direct no cables
came with it either.
--
You can do a search for other models by entering KVM at the Pricewatch
web-site.
But be aware that there is more to a KVM than just the ability to
"switch".
--
You should look for specs that say "full mouse-and-keyboard
emulation" and for the abilty to handle a decent monitor resolution.
