Question about Microwave Ovens

Suction fan on GE over-the-range microwave

MY GE JVM1660BBC HAS A FAN ON IT FOR SUCKING UP SMOKE FROM OUR RANGE THAT IS UNDER IT.

THE FAN HARDLY HAS ANY SUCTION THOUGH, SO WHENEVER WE TURN ON THE OVEN, SMOKE GETS INTO THE KITCHEN. DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT THE PROBLEM MIGHT BE? IT DOESN'T LOOK LIKE ITS THE FILTERS, BECAUSE I TRIED CLEANING THEM. THE MICROWAVE IS ABOUT 7 YEARS OLD. IS IT JUST POOR DESIGN?

Thanks.

Was the fan ducted to the outside of the house, or does the air discharge out the top of the microwave, right back into the kitchen again?

If the fan was not ducted out, then it doesn't matter how much it sucks. The smoke will still be in the kitchen/house.

If it was ducted out, and the suction seems lower than before, then the damper which should be installed at the top of the microwave may be stuck closed. These fans do not have a lot of pressure capability, so they can not open heavy or stuck dampers.
You might also check the vent leading to the outside of the house to make sure nothing has restricted the air flow.

Reply back what you find and we can help you more.

If the blade is not big enough, the motor not powerful enough, or the vent size is wrong then it will not work properly, On thing you can do is check the vent cap and make sure that it has not falling down onto the vent pipe and blocking air movement.

How can I get the fan to turn off when the microwave is turned off?

Most GE over the range microwave ovens have a cavity heat thermostat. if the exhaust fan cut on due to external heat generated to oven, the fan will run until unit totally cools down. in this case unplug unit. Also fan can run if you have a broken door paw or if one of the door secondary switches is bad.

GE Spacemaker JVM1640SJ Exhaust Fan Whines & Doesn't Do a Good Job

The vent fan assembly's blade assembly may be freewheeling on the motor shaft (which can be fixed with a couple of drops of super glue or epoxy) or there may be a foreign object or critter in the fan blades.

You will have to remove the oven from the wall to inspect and remove and inspect the vent motor. You can download the installation instructions here.

At my Web site, you can get details, plus I have a video available showing how to remove a typical over the range control panel assembly in under 5 minutes.

You can order any needed GE parts from the Pros here, my favorite affiliated supplier.

GE JVM1430 over the range microwave/exhaust fan unit. The exhaust fan (not the microwave cooling fan) all of a sudden has its speed slowed down considerably. The unit vents out the back, not top. ...

Sounds like a strip down of the fan and lubricate the bearings with sewing machine or thin cycle oil will do the trick.
Hope that helps.

Model is GE JVM1430BD002. Microwave works but range fan and lights do not. Unit "popped" when fan was turned on one time and hasn't worked since. Is there a fuse or breaker for the range hood functions?

Yes - there is an internal "special" in-line fuse. Most likely it is the fan that has caused it. Clean the fan with switch-cleaner spray and make sure it is smooth running. Replace special fuse with identical version.
Check lights before operation.
Replace all covers before test.

GE Microwave Profile Spacemaker Runs on its own

Your microwave turning on by itself is a "self preservation feature" of the GE Profile Advantium and maybe some other models. Read the manual, When your over the range oven gets warm enough, for whatever reason the venting fan comes on until a satisfactory oven temperature is reached. You are not permitted to shut the vent fan off. Also it seems a temperature near room temp must be achieved before it shuts the fan motor off, it is very annoying. We had to return our Advantium because of fan noise. I configured the ovens vent fan to the recirculate direction because we do not have a vent duct that exits the house over our range. When the vent fan acting as the ovens cooling fan automatically turned on we would have to leave the house to hear each other talk. Too bad we really liked the oven other than that major problem. I have a ge above range spacemaker xl1800 it seems to work fine except their is a rattling noise when its running it sounds like a bad fan or something comeing loose it seems like its comeing from under...

The noise you are hearing is due to the fan. The fan is used to cool the magnetron during cooking, and because this fan is not working the magnetron is overheating and the thermal protector is opening, killing power to the unit. All you need to fix this is a new fan blade. The fan blade(look for part #80) is slipping on the motor shaft ( the noise you are hearing).

GE XL 1800

If the blade is broken then you can buy a new one from---

GE FAN BLADE

Please ask for further clarifications.

A Fixya rating would be appreciated if you find it useful.

VENT NOT SUCKING

I would suggest checking the filters, checking the duct work (including the outdoor vent) and if that doesn't turn up the problem, the hood vent exhaust fan blade assembly may have come loose on the shaft.

You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here to help you verify the filter status and duct work.
