Question about Sony VAIO VGN-FS640W Notebook

1 Answer

Sony Vaio with Vista has stopped reading Data CDs

My Sony Vaio has stopped seeing Data CDs - even after burning them correctly. It just sees them as a blank disc.

All the Data CDs work fine on other machines and the Vaio can view any other type of CD/DVD without a problem.

I've also tried all the obvious things such as cleaning etc.

Thanks in advance.

Hello Braza, thanks for the message.

No other CD/DVD software installed other than what the Vaio came with -
Roxio. It has worked fine since I bought the laptop in Nov 2007.

I only occassionaly use it and it's pretty much out of the box because
I mainly use my PC at work. I only use this for web browsing at home
for about 2hrs a week at the most.

The only software installed since the purchase is Windows Vista updates and a couple of programs like Firefox.

The model of the Vaio is a VGN-NR10E/S.

Hello Smokeyone, I've just updated the driver using Device Manager etc. but no change.

The CD/DVD hardware is a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ870QJ ATA Device.

Also installed the latest Windows update but no luck.

Tried a lot more old CDs too. The good news is that it does see some Data CDs that were burnt before Aug 2008 but fails to see any burnt since then - and these are the same brand of disc, and as clean, as those it can see.

    Hello Smokeyone,

Yes, it burns and reads Windows Live File discs fine and seems to burn via Media Player as well.

The problem is just with reading Data CDs - especially ones burnt recently in any type of software, Windows or Roxio.

It's as if Vista is forcing me to make the CDs only compatible with Windows so that I can't see them on Mac's, presumably.

Thanks for that Smokeyone. I don't think Media Player is running but will have a go and get back to you. Cheers.

    Hello Smokeyone,

The naughty culprit was BBC iPlayer and not Windows Media Player - unless it's using some of its bits.

    Thanks loads for your help.

Shortly after posting the last response the CD drive again stopped seeing most Data CDs. I uninstalled a whole load of programs but still no luck. The Vaio seems to only see Data CDs that it has a memory of opening between the time Vista was installed (Nov 2007) and Sep 2008 - the problem could be because I installed iTunes around that time.

    Can anyone help?

I can't boot up the Vista install on a Sony Vaio VGN-NR160E

go to your BIOS Setup, see to it that there is a Hard Disk Boot Priority, maybe you didn't put it there.

My sony vaio vgn-n110g w/ pioneer dvr stopped burnning

Sounds like you may need a new drive. If I remember correctly those run about $100 and if you feel confident and read the directions (and research it correctly on the internet) you should be able to install it yourself.

My Sony Vaio FR-130 will read cds and will read DVDs that are not copyrighted but will not play dvd's that are copyrighted.

Try reloading the DVD drivers...If you don't have them on cd, you can download drivers from sony website. once you download drivers, reboot comp. see if that works...let me know.

good luck
