Router (WGR614v6) Secure Connection Issues

Windows XP, Netgear WGR614v6 router, Motorola Surfboard modem

We are trying to secure our wireless network. When we go to the router settings and set up the secure network (WEP), our PC will no longer connect to the wireless network. After we input the password, it just sits there 'waiting for network', then times out.

It connects just fine when the network is unsecure.

I followed the steps outlined in the solution and the clarification request. I can connect initially to the network after I have changed it to secure. However, when I restart the computer (for whatever reason), I can no longer connect to the router via wireless. The network displays just fine in the wireless network connection window (view available wireless networks), but it doesn't connect automatically. When I select it and click connect, it asks me for the password and then displays "waiting for network" and never continues (the next part would be 'acquiring IP adddress' or something.

Let's check to make sure your PC is able to meet the same level of encryption standards being enforced by the router. Right click your wireless icon, choose Properties, Wireless Networks. It sounds like you are able to see your network so from the list in Preferred Networks highlight yours and choose Properties. The first tab is Association. There you will see Wireless Network Key. Network Authentication and Data Encryption are the first 2 boxes. What is in each of those compared with what the router has assigned to it? I know at my house, my wife's laptop is a little older so I had to drop the encryption level to make hers compatible with the network. Let me know what you come up with!

I want to make sure my wireless signal is secure. How do I do this?

I assume that you have a wireless router that is connected to your Motorola cable-modem.

Connect to the web-server "inside" the router, and configure the wireless network:
* set an SSID -- the "name" for your network
* set an encryption-level -- use 'WPA' or 'WPA2'
* set a password for your network

Now, your wireless communications between your computer and your router will be encrypted, i.e., "secure".

Also, having a password keeps other computers out, if their owners do not know the password.

The wireless connection is not working. The only network that shows up is lynksis wich has a waek connection and asks for a password that i have neever had to use before, so i dont know what the password...

Unfortunately the Motorola SB5100 SURFboard is not a wireless device. The Linksys you are trying to connect to is most likely someone in your area and they have it password protected, which is why it is asking for a password.

In order to setup Wireless you will need to invest in a Linksys, Netgear, D-Link, or some other Wireless Router. They can be found at any computer store.

Once you have the wireless router you can connect an Ethernet cable from the Motorola SB5100 SURFboard to the Wireless Router. From there follow the instructions for the Wireless Router you purchased to set it up and secure it.

If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it and give a testimonial for my response.

Thank You,

How to set up wep password for my Motorola sb50101u wireless router

The WEP encryption key is configured in the wireless settings in the router. If your wireless router can support WPA and WPA2 then I suggest you use this because it is a much stronger encryption.
To secure your wireless network and view/configure or change the encryption key, please click on this link and follow my instructions :-

We just tried to secure our wireless motorola sbg900 and now the wireless portion doesn't work. We have to use an ethernet cable. How do we reverse this and still make it secure?

To change any wireless settings on the router, you will need to make wired connections to the router.
If you change the wireless settings on the wireless laptop it will drop the connection because you are changing a wireless setting.

You need to properly configure the wireless settings of your computer. Make sure to disable the firewall on your computer like windows firewall or any other firewall. Now make sure that you have entered the correct wireless security key on your wireless settings. Go to control panel > network connections > right click wireless network connections > properties. Go to Wireless Networks tab and remove all the Preferred Networks there. Go to Add and proceed to adding manually your wireless settings.

Wireless routers

Just plug the cable modem ethernet into the input to your router and you will be fine. Just remember, if you decide you want to make any changes to your router settings through your browser, make sure you hook up an ethernet line from your laptop to the router before making any changes. The reason for this is if you make a change in security settings on your router while wireless, the router will reboot and if your laptop did have the settings changed in it, you can be locked out.
Not that you can't get back in, but it is a pain to have to do.
