Polaris 500 xc backfiring through carbs, running on 1 cylinder

This sled is backfiring through carbs and it feels like its running on one cylinder. One plug is dark and one looks washed. I just put new gastank, headgaskets, basegaskets, cleaned carbs. Pistons look good and there isn't any blowby. The compression in each cylinder is 120.

What would be the cause or most likely cause of noticable hesitation on acceleration of 2002 polaris xc sp 500 with tps

I've owned many polaris snowmobiles and to me it sounds exactly as the current owner states. It probably needs the carbs thoroughly cleaned, taken out and apart. I would also get new plugs as well. I prefer ngk plugs for my sleds. If you've never done it there ate plenty of you tube videos on how to clean and adjust the carbs.

Harley downpipes glowing red

Could be running VERY rich causing ignition of the exhaust gases once the second cylinder is on its exhaust cycle. This would cause both flames out of the exhaust as well as the crappy performance. Pull the plugs and see if they're dark.

Clean the plugs
If the plugs look darkened you can use the A\F mixture screw on the carbs to lean out the mixture.

To tune like this.
Find both A\F mixture screws on both carburetors.
Find out which way to spin them to lean the mixture out (for me it was to tighten them).
Using 1\8th turn adjustments do one carb at a time until it runs better\stops backfiring.
Now that it's running decently go for a spin WITH NEW PLUGS, after a good little jaunt let the engine cool and pull the plugs, if they look white you need more fuel, if they look sooty you could need to lean out the mixture 'slightly'.

I have a 95 Road King that isn't running right, it

Backfiring out of the exhaust is usually an ignition problem. Unburned fuel is getting into the exhaust system because it's not being ignited in the cylinder. When the engine fires on that cylinder again, it ignites the raw fuel in the exhaust causing the pop that people call a backfire. I'd investigate the ignition system. Connect a timing light to each of the spark plug wires if it has a single fire ignition or either of them if the ignition system is the stock dual fire. Start the engine and watch the timing light to tell if the engine is missing as the light will miss a flash.

Good Luck

I have an 89 ZX10 it sat for about 8 months when i fired it up it ran like a pig coughing & spluttering backfiring. I cleaned the carbies put in new plugs checked compressions 170 - 180 on all four....

You still have an obstruction in one or more carb. Start it cold and start feeling for a cold exhaust pipe. (That will be the bad cylinder) Be careful as they get hot very fast.

Polaris xc 500 twin one cylinder not running right

DOES THE CYLINDER HAVE LOW COMPRESSION. IT SHOULD BE SOMEWHERE AROUNT 100-130 PSI AND NO MORE THAN 15% DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO CYLINDERS. IF IT IS LOW, A REBUILD IS GOING TO BE REQUIRED. IF IT IS OK THAN CHANGE THE PLUGS AND DO A CARB CLEANING AND SYNC THEM.

HOPE THIS HELPS

Certainly the carbs should be treated as a pair and so when one is suspected both should be checked. The cylinders will be unable to perform equally unless both carbs are tuned equally and synchronised at idle and at various throttle openings.

As part of the checking process it is important to ensure both cylinders are capable of performing equally. A compression test has limited use and a cylinder efficiency test is better. Injecting compressed air into the cylinder would prove the effectiveness of the valve seats and piston rings. A small amount of leakage of the inlet valve seat would make little difference to a compression test but it would make a great deal of difference to the way the cylinder performs.

Another important check is the valve clearances and also the ignition timing if it is adjustable. Some engines with twin ignition systems need to have the timing set for each cylinder.
