Question about Delta 31 - 255X X5 18'' x 36'' Drum Sander

4 Answers

I have a Delta 31-255x drum sander. While sanding rather heavy 8/4 hickory, the feed table jammed. Now, the table will not adjust up or down.

The sander is very clean and lubricated with silicone. I live in a very dry climate, so no rust or corrosion. Also, the sander is attached to a 1000cfm dust collector. I have checked the 3/4" in. bearing nuts for proper torque. What else?

Makes sense. I will try complete disassembly and check for missing teeth or damaged belt. Thankyou.

Drum sander are slow and jam quite easily, particularlu if you are working on wide surfaces. Drum sanders are good for small pieces, better using an oscillating belt sander for large surfaces.

If you have to use this sander for a big job adjust carefully the height, so to reduce the risk of jamming.

You find more on drum sanders here.

Also something in here.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

Based on your description, I suspect the the mechanism for lowering/raising the sanding table has jammed. It is most likely that the level of the table has drastically changed meaning one of the timing gears has teeth broken. This of course requires dis-assembly to determine location of the jam and effect alignment or parts replacement.

An exploded parts diagram would be of help. Should replacement parts be required, they are available here and/or here for starters.

Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

A quarter turn is too much. You should only turn the wheel a maximum of 1/16 turn. Sanding should be done with just the sand (not the paper) touching the workpiece. Patience is the key for drum sanders. Courser grit sandpaper will help remove material faster if that's your goal.

The belt slips off my Belt Sander

All sander will have two adjustments. The first is to release the sanding belt by retracting the position of one of the rollers. The second adjustment moves one of the rollers belt tension from side to side. The roller angular position is changed, sometime by a single knob or screw, and sometimes by two separate adjusting screws.

Changing the sanding pads

You use a 1/2 inch socket wrench to remove the nut at the top of the spindle shaft, slide the old sanding sleeve off and the new one on.  Replace the nut.  You may also have to insert a different size table insert if you are changing the sleeve size.
