unless you want to take the drive to a data recovery specialist buschchrist1 is right. If you want to find a local data recovery shop just go to google.com and search for data recovery

If its external and its corupt and windows just won tgive you access, your most likely bonned.

Youcan try using some special utilities to see if you can recover them but often times windows just wont do it.

Usually what happens is the partition gets corrupt and windows cant tell if its NTFS or FAT and just says, " Its corrupt" and thats the end of it.

You may have to re-partition it to get it working if formatting it doesnt work.

ASKS ME TO FORMAT

File-system corruption or failing hardware. If you have important data take it to a professional right away, don't mess around with it any more.

Check disk in another computer may fix the problem but it may also decrease the chances that a pro can retrieve any of your data.

PC Cannot recognize External Seagate Drive

This is a common problem. IF the external was unplugged during a operations, there is a possibility of hard drive corruption. Also, you mentioned it was on a MAC. If your buddy formatted the drive for the MAC (Which would be HSF) so PC won't see the filesystem anymore until you reformat for PC (FAT or NTFS). I understand you might not was to reformat, but that is my recommended answer to this issue. There is one other choice though. Try googling Diskwarrior. This program is pretty good at repairing corrupted harddrives and it pretty good at detecting filesystems. If disk warrior doesn't do the trick, I would go with reformating.
