Question about Gateway (802.11usb) Wireless Adapter

Problems with wireless connection - gateway notebook

Hi, I have had a gateway T1631 notebook, MS Vista, (with Realtek RTL8187S wireless adapter) for about 6 months now and only recently I have been having trouble connecting to my home wireless network - my roommate has a mac and has no problems connecting to the home wireless network. The home network is a secured network (WPA Personal, secured network with a 16 digit alphanumeric passphrase).   I have no trouble connecting to unsecured wireless networks.  However, when I try connecting to the secured home network it does not work.  As far as I can tell, the passphrase does not seem to be saving properly.  When I change passphrase to the 16 digit alphanumeric, it reverts back to an incorrect +/-8 digit code.  I have tried removing the network connection via the control panel and then re-entering the passphrase but this does not work either.  I am unsure where the problem lies and any help would be MUCH appreciated!!!

Might be several things, but perhaps start with checking for any driver updates that might be available.

Now that I can see the rest of your post, one route is to set the security type to "no authentication (Open)" , WEP encryption, then type in your passphrase. Is the network availability set to "all users"? I've had this issue at home before, but it's been a while, and I don't remember every step needed. You can also type in the wireless router number that's on the bottom of the router for your passphrase, that might be easiest.

Plug in an ethernet cable into your ethernet card port on the left hand side of your laptop. When it connects to the internet click on the Windows update icon in the system tray. It should show you a Realtek Wireless RTL8187b wireless adapter driver update. Install it, you may need to reboot, but in any case you will have wireless networks available to you and you can pull out the ethernet cable. Good luck.

You should check for updated drivers for the wireless NIC device. Gateway may have them available, but no guarantees. Did you do a compatibility check befiore installing Vista? It would have shown you what if any devices, and software were not compatible with vista before install. Try get as much info about the wireless device you can, and do a web search for known issues and solutions also. You may find others have had the same problem and a workaround.

WiFi unable to connect/maintain connection

Hello b... couple things.

First; see if going into Control PanelNetwork Connections and disabling the wireless network connection, then enabling it again fixes it. If it does then you have a work-around...

Second; there was a Realtek driver update offered by Windows Update. If that has
been installed (Control Panel-Programs and Features-View Installed Updates)
roll it back to the previous driver through Device manager and get the
update direct from either Toshiba or Realtek.

See if that helps.

This seems to be happening with that Wireless card and Vista... let me know what happens please.

It sounds like you need to reinstall the driver for the Realtek network interface card (NIC). I recommend accessing the Gateway web site to find the model number of the laptop, and then download the driver for the Realtek NIC. This should restore the functionality.

Problems with wireless and MS Vista

Try these first:

change channels to 1-6-or 11. Make sure you change all of your wireless computers4.gif.

check is to make sure you are NOT using "IEEE 802.1x authentication for this network."

You can find at setting under "Wireless Network Connection Properties" and then under "Authentication" tab of your network properties.

This particular authentication method is periodically logging you off the network and re-authenticating.

Check the adapter in device manager to make sure that windows is not shutting the adapter down to save power.

Cordless phones1.gif and wireless ethernet cards use overlapping frequencies. As a test, you can unplug the AC cords from all the cordless phones in the area and see if it helps.
