Question about MSI : MS-7061-020 VIAKM400/A&V&L/SATA Motherboard (MOT73)
I had this computer with a ATA 100 drive with Win XP running fine. I have an AMD 2200 XP processor, 2 GB ram. I want to replace that old ATA drive (9 yrs. old) with a newer Seagate SATA drive. I've left the jumper on the back of the drive because the motherboard only supports 150 mbs. I have all of the newest drivers from MSI. I cannot intstall Win XP on this drive. I can boot with floppy and computer does recognize drive but when trying to install Win XP it says the computer doesn't have a HD hooked up. Funny thing is just for the heck of it I installed Vista and it came out just fine. I don't want to run Vista on this computer as the components are as fast as they should be. So, the computer sees the SATA drive if I try to install Vista but not XP. At this point I'm just about ready to pull out my hair, and I don't have that much left to pull out. Any help would be appreciatedl
The problem is that your version of XP does not have SATA drivers and therefore does not recognise your new drive. Vista does. If you Google the problem you will find many solutions on how to rectify the situation. Basically, you have to make a floppy disc with the correct drivers for your Motherboard's hard drive controller. Then, when you launch your Windows XP installer, it will ask you a question about needing to install 3rd party drivers. Yes is your answer. Tap F6 to ensure that the installer doesn't skip.Insert the floppy disc and then after the drivers are loaded, the installation will proceded normally. The other alternative is to leave your existing XP installation in place and add the new disc. Later you can clone your old disc onto the new drive and then remove your original disc.
