My Advice to you is to take this set to a TV Repair Shop and Let Them Quote a repair Cost to fix this problem Trust Me on this one I my self do not care to work on these Sets After Replacing convergence ICs To Enter Service Menu / For Realinement on convergence is not an easy job , But First Clean all 3 Tube lenses, and mirror Then adjust contast, and sharpnest and if you can solder resolder flyback transfomer and all of the convergence yoke Plugins on power board CK high voltage capacitor it is blue 2Kv feeds off the hori output Transistor.

A grainy picture on an HDTV is caused by an anolog signal coming through a Digital converted tv, such as yur HDTV. You need an HD signal, or HD converter box. PERIOD. There is nothing wrong with your set. Contact your cable company and rent or buy a Digital/HD converter.
You did a great job explaining the problem (grainy or rice grain) is what we use in the cable field for this problem.

Reception problems, fix your antenna. if still has the same problems, try adjusting tuning. The problem could most likely be with the set's STK ICs. The soldering comes loose, sometimes actually coming loose INSIDE the IC, where it solders in there! Heat/cold over and over translates into expand/contract over and over.
Just resoldering the legs usually does the trick, but if you have continued to use your set while hurt, the ICs may eventually go out completely and need replacement. Resoldering them in before that time usually saves the ICs and never needs to be done again.
There will be either one or two of them, and they will be heavily heat sunk - as in mounted on a big heat sink, with vertical fins. That's all I can say without seeing the unit in front of me, open. They usually face towards the front, are in the middle of the middle board, and the name of the ICs is covered by a screw-on plate, which has to be removed for replacement.
Be generous with the heat sink compound when replacing the ICs, get the old stuff off the heat sink with a putty knife if it has dried out.

To check whether you need to replace the ICs or not, with the unit on if you tap on the heat sink with something long and not conductive, like a stick, and it affects your conv - be VERY careful, this has to be done while the unit is on - you can probably get by with just resoldering the legs. If not and it just won't converge, IC replacement will be necessary. I recommend replacing both if you replace one, because next week the other one may go out and you may have to get in and out of the unit all over again.

Best way is usually to remove the entire light box, tho sometimes it's best to remove just the board, other times you can prop the whole board up and do the resoldering on your back.

The name of the STK ICs is STK392-570. You can Go to a website "bluestar-online.com" and find them for sale.

Hi there, this kind of build will have this problem due to the rear projection set up. sometimes the lamps and convergence board can get out of sink and cause blur and grainy picture. i would use the DVI or rgb/hd connections. this may fix the picture quality a bit. im sure the convergence board is going out at this time so, i suggest you to prepare for the replacement of this board. you can also improve the visual look by ordering a replacement screen from the manufacture. the screen is bombarded by hot rays during long term viewing that can produce a cloud on the back side of your projection screen.

No reset will address this problem. If the distortion appears like a 3-D picture, the problem is in the convergence circuit. This could be as simple as poor solder connections or a defective IC. Can you solder? If so, you can fix this yourself. Be aware that there are potentially dangerous high voltages present even when the set is unplugged.

Update this if you wish to attempt the repair and I will provide additional details and instructions.

Thanks,
Dan

Try first changing the vido cable, if the problem is not the cable ift may be a fault, in that case it may be expensive to fix.

The tubes are CRTs, not convergence tubes. The convergence is regulated by convergence Ics, here is explained: Fixing Convergence problems in RPTV's

However convergence fault does not cause graini picture, that is associated to bad signal, tuner board faults, digital control faults, light engine faults.

If all is done than there is a problem with Convergence IC, it needs repair.

Cc color distortion bows at too and bottom

All projection TV sets have two very common problems. One is convergence ( 3D/Warped video or dead set) the other is CRT fluid ( Dull Video). Here are more details and solutions for both.

Common Problem #1) Convergence has gone out

Projection TV sets need to have all three colors - RED - BLUE - GREEN - lined up correctly on the screen in order for the video to look normal. When its out of alignment the video will look 3D, wavy, distorted, etc. In some cases the TV will also not show any video. Most of the time you just need to adjust your convergence in the TV menu. If you cannot adjust it in the menu - then your convergence is broken and needs to be repaired.

This is a very common failure on these projection sets and a fairly simple DIY fix. All projection sets including Samsung, RCA, Sony, Philip Magnavox, Panasonic, Pioneer, Akai, GE, JVC, Toshiba, and others at some point will have the same problem.

Common Symptoms include....

  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.
  • TV shuts off after powering on. Power light will blink. TV may also make a chirping noise.
Here are some pics of convergence problems.

Common Problem #2) CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the settings menu then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move RED and BLUE in all directions - up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions or cant move them far enough your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

Note: If you TV has as flash focus or magic focus button only try pressing the button. If it fails to fix the convergence your need to fix it. See below for a solution

93a1209.pngCONVERGENCE SOLUTION

You will need to replace the convergence chips and possibly some convergence resistors and pico fuses.
This is a a fairly easy DIY job if you know what you are doing. If you have never done this before we would advise calling a shop or if you want to do it yourself get a complete kit with instructions and support from www.TvRepairKits.com

The most common problem for this complaint is contaminated coolant for the picture tubes. If you look directly into the three picture tubes you will probably see a haze in the blue one. This is fairly common but requires a knowledgeable service man to take care of.
