Question about Gateway 7405GX Notebook

4 Answers

Power button on laptop is broken.

I have a Gateway 7405 laptop & the power button on it dosen't work. It appears to be broken.
I removed all the screws on the bottom,
but cannot seperate the bezel from the keyboard. How do I get to the key to repair/replace it?
Thanks, BobIn my case, the conductive traces broke apart inside the small ribbon cable that connects the power switch and the media switches to the motherboard.

Now I am seeking info on how I can permanently wire it "on" because I don't have much hope of finding a replacement cable.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

I'm not sure which of the problem is your concern, nonetheless, pls try:

  • if disassembly is the issue, if all the screws have been removed, then what would be keeping the lids, covers, panels, bezel still in place would be small tabs on the edges that fits slots. Carefully prying with the help of a small slim flattened tool like a jeweler's screwdriver would help snap them off to unlock. Perhaps a pictorial illustration would be of further help. Although meant for memory replacement, it would give you the general idea on how to proceed;
  • if your concern is the "small ribbon cable" and you would be looking to modify any appropriately fitting flex cable, you could try cellphone flex cable or even those used by CD/DVD drives. Of course the best would be to source parts from reputable parts suppliers. This is an example of one who carries even replacement motherboards.
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

The cable is easily available with many of the technicians.i have myself changed them for many of my clents for those who had this problem.it wont cost much.i would suggest dont try hooking up in a wrong way as it would spoil the unit and make it look more shabby too.replacing the cable is the better option.

Replacement cable can still be purchased at any laptop service center, they have a spare cable for the power.

Sir,
This is a very common problem with this series. It is an engineering blunder.
The button cover (what you press) has a tiny tab on the side which is what press the actual button on the circuit board. This tab has broken off and many people are having the same problem on the MX7000 series. Once broken off the only way to turn the laptop on is to remove the white plastic button cover. Once you remove this you will have a hole where the power button is. Now with a pencil eraser end or pen you will be able to press the actual button thats on the circuit board.

thanks good luck

How to replace a video cable

In a Gateway M-7351u Notebook PC?

2) http://www.insidemylaptop.com/replace-keyboard-gateway-m-series-notebook/

Motherboard side of video cable, should be under the Switch Cover, (LED indicators, Power On button, speakers, etc), or under the Keyboard close to the Switch Cover.

Don't forget to remove ALL power. Remove the AC adapter (Charger), and Battery. (Use CARE. Wires going to Switch Cover. Do not cut them by accident, or pull on them when removing Switch Cover )

My Gateway 7405 randomly shuts down. It does not matter how long it has been running for. It has shutdown during bootup and after running for many hours. Just before it shutsdown the fan accelerates to...

You might try changing the Power Options (its in the Control Panel) Properties so that all windows are set to NEVER. That is, so that it will never automatically turn off monitor, hard disks or go to standby. Also turn off all the alarms. This worked for my Presario R3000 running WinXP Sp2 which would shut off for no apparent reason. Having said that, you should blow out your fan with compressed air occasionally. And check that your power cord is OK. When you pull out your power cord, the battery icon should show operation.

Gateway 7405 battery and charge problems

This sounds like a problem with the charging circuit on the board.
There could be a problem with the power jack:

They are available but will require disassembly and probably some soldering to replace.
It might be best to try another MB if you can find one cheap. Like this:

Lgateway laptop won't power on

Your computer works fine. Its just a little plastic tab that has broken off of the power button. Bad design! The power button doesn't sit right about the power switch. The broken tab makes the switch. The button is directly about the LED light. You have to remove the power button panel (Your user manual will instruct you on that) and then you can rig something where the plast tab was or just remove the circuit board from the panel and just power it on with your finger on the circuit board. No risk of shock. Well it hasn't gotten me yet :o) There's only two screws that you have to remove from the back of the computer to remove the panel and keep in mind that the top hinge covers are part of the power button panel so you have to gently loosen those with a little screw driver as well.

The real button is under the button you see. You might be able to get the keyboard cover off. If it's not broken broken you could try to reseat it. The part unless you find a cheaper source is 149.00 (which frankly is ridiculous)

Gateway 7405 GX Fully shuts down at random intervals

It sounds like a thermal shut down when the processor over heats, one thing it might be is that the heat sink is not seated properly on the processor. When removing the heat sink make sure you have thermal paste to place between the processor and heat sink. That should give you a good starting point.
