Question about Frigidaire FRT17G4B Top Freezer Refrigerator

Open Question

What happens when the compressor goes on a fridge?

We have a rental property and while we were on holidays they took out the fridge and started renting a bigger but older fridge from a rental company.  They are saying that they lost 200.00 worth of groceries and when the repair man (whose company name and number they can't remember) came and told them the compresssor went and to buy a new one because the old one would cost to much to repair.
I went today and plugged in the fridge.  After a couple hours the fridge and freezer read 5 degrees celcius and -13.  The motor seemed to be running fine.
We've had false alarms from these people before, and while we like them very much I don't really feel like buying a new fridge unless I actually have to.
The fridge is 3 years old.  Frigidaire.

I am thinking there is nothing wrong with the refrigerator. Those temps sound good to me after a few hours.

But, I would be suspect there could have been a different problem that only time will tell. IF the defrost system has failed, the evaporator will eventually freeze up and the refrigerator will quit cooling. You won't know this until after several weeks of cooling, including typical opening and closing of doors, or, by checking out all the defrost circuit elements.

Compressors are typically not erratic operating devices. Again, another reason to allow the box to run awhile to see if any of the possible failures occurs again.

Let us know what happens next. We'll be glad to help.

SOURCE: samsung fridge freezer model number

Hi just wondering if you figured out the problem with your Samsung fridge yet.
It is definately a problem with the defrost part of the fridge. After approximately 4 to 10 hours dependent on many different factors it enters into defrost mode to get rid of any excess ice in both the fridge and the freezer. During the defrost stage the compressor will not run. If any fault occurs during the defrost stage the fridge will not restart unless you turn it off and back on again which restes the pcb and takes it out of defrost mode and the timer starts again.
Please let me know how you went with it.

SOURCE: Freezer not cold enough

Begin by turning the freezer temperature setting dial to a lower setting. Then wait a few hours to see if your problem is fixed. If that does not correct the problem you probably need to have the coolant system recharged. That requires special equipment so you will have to call in a repair person.

The fridge in the rental house will be empty and not in use for over a month. Can I unplug it or I should keep it running? Will unplugging it damage the compressor?

No it will not damage the compressor. It is worse on a refrigerator in they loss power and get power back, as in an electrical power outage. Than to leave with no power on. Be sure to leave the door open so it does start smelling.

At the back of the fridge check for a small drain hole that allows the water to flow out to the top of the compressor They do block up from ice and food residue (peas -milk etc) I would have a very serious talk to the rental agency as the fridge repair is the responsibility of the land lord as it came with the property. Ask for a new fridge or a good serviceable fridge. The freezer door gaskets are probably not sealing ( gone hard) allowing air in with the air moisture turning to ice.

Water dripping inside KTLA22EMSS01

Your freezer actually cools your fridge. It sounds like you have ice build up in your freezer behind the back panel. You should be able to unscrew the back wall inside your freezer. A hair dryer should help defrost or keep it open for a few and use a screwdriver to remove the build up of ice. The ice has made its way down the vent and when it hits the fridge it is above 32 degrees so it is melting. Hope this helps. I manage rental properties and have had it happen on a few occasions.

Fridge noise/

You need to get a repair man to your house ASAP. This noise you are hearing is the compressor start relay and the click sound is the overload protector heating up and shutting it off. You may have a defective relay, or possibly a bad compressor. The relay and overload are attatched to the compressor in the back of the fridge.
Check your owner's manual to see what kind of a warranty you have on the "sealed system" Hopefully the parts at least will be covered should you need a new compressor.
Sometimes if the compressor is bad on these models you can let it sit un plugged for a couple hours and try to re-start it.
Good luck to you!!
