Dell Dimension 4700 desktop to Phillips TV

Hi, I am trying to connect my desktop to my tv using a VGA cable.
I go in to VGA mode (pressing F8 on start up) the picture on the TV is fine but I can no longer use my keyboard.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to resolve this?

Thanks,

Ryan

    Hi,

I would like to use my flat screen tv (Phillips 20PF4121/05) to watch films connected via a VGA cable and a dell dimension 4700 desktop. The only way I seem to be able to get a good picture on the tv is to go into advanced options on the desktop by repeatedly pressing F8 on windows start up and selecting VGA mode which allows me to to have the pc screen on the tv but the keyboard no longer works.

I have tried to get this to work on normal start up by changing the screen resolution as per previous post but this does not fix the problem as the screen is out of focus and fuzzy.

When connecting my laptop which is no longer working... to fix this problem I would press fn & F11 to get a good picture.

    Thanks knotbeendan

The videocard is a radeon x300 and I am running windows xp home edition, as far as I can see I do not appear to have a desktop manager.

Just on the radeon site just now going to try and update the drivers as you suggest.

  • gimmiesound Feb 11, 2009

    Hi Dan,

Just ran a diagnostic tool to find out what graphics card I have and the results confirmed that it's a "Radeon X300" chip type Radeon X300/X550 type.

    Internal dac type 400MHz.

    128 mb memory.

Yeah the TV has a PC mode.

My pc is almost ancient and it probably about time I got myself a decent Ram, Video card, and sound card update. :-)

Thanks for your help on this one

    Cheers

Dan, I updated my drivers and downloaded the desktop manager for my video card and messed about with the settings. It's working perfectly now.

Thanks again for all your help with this one

    Cheers

you are going to have to find drivers for your video card it sounds like. Try going to the manufacturers website and see if they have any drivers for doing this type of setup.

Do you know if you have any kind of desktop manager for your video card? To find out right click on your desktop and see if there is something on there from your card man. Like Nvidia properties or something.

What type of card do you have and what os are you running?

Basicially your problem is that laptops come ready for dual display and it is a little harder to do this on desktops when you have different size monitors and such. So you have to set up your computer to have dual monitors which are different.

Is your origional monitor VGA or DVI?

Can you be a little more clear on what you are asking? What do you mean pressing F8 on start up? If you have your computer set up as a monitor is it an LCD tv/monitor, or what do you mean VGA?

Or is your computer set up for dual display?
    (two monitors)

You should be able to go to the control panel > display and set the resolution to one that will look clear on the TV.

Explain why you hit F8 on start up?

F8 on start up is for safe mode and tha may be the reason your keyboard is not working. You should start your computer normally if the TV is hooked to your VGA port.

HOW CAN I CONNECT MY SATELLITE C660-10T TO MY TV?

Hi. You need a VGA cable, the same that is used for Desktops (from monitor to base unit). Connect it to your laptops VGA port (a square(ish) port with holes in it), the the other end to a similar port on your TV. Switch laptop and TV on, connect your TV to PC input (read your manual if you are unsure), then on your Laptop select Fn and F8 or F5 (look for the Function key with two square boxes - or a small laptop and a larger box). Pressing those keys together will push the image to your TV.

How can i connect my dell inspiron 1721 to my tv samsung led

If your Samsung TV has a VGA input then connect a VGA cable to the TV and the other end of this cable to the video port on your Dell laptop. Turn on your TV and select the VGA (computer) input then boot up your Dell laptop.and then the video data from the laptop will automatically divert to the TV.
You can toggle between the TV and laptop LCD screen by holding down on the Fn key and press the F8 key.

I have a sony trinitron and trying to hook up to a dell laptop latitude to watch nexflick.I have a 7 pin s vedio cable to 3 rca.what is the problem that the picture not showing up?

Did you Press the FN (Function Key) + F8 keys on the laptop to display the video on the Sony? Press the FN Key and hold it while you press the F8 Key, this toggles the video into 3 different modes each time you press the keys. The modes are display on laptop only, display on laptop & TV or display on TV only. Also Make sure you have changed the TV's Input Source so that it can know to receive a signal from the laptop. On my setup I go S-Video to S-Video because my tv and laptop have S-video, therefore I tell the TV that the input is S-Video. I installed a VGA to VGA at an Event Center because both the TV and Laptop were using VGA, so I set the Input on the TV to PC since it did not have a VGA Option.

I've just bought Cable to connect with VGA port of DELL E6400 connect to AV TV but I cannot switch to TV. I'm not sure whether I need to set up resolution at my notebook or not.

Did you press Fn+F8? You should also try right clicking on the desktop, bringing up display properties, and messing around there. Alternatively, there may be a setting on your TV that is not set properly.

I am trying to connect my laptop to the TV and would appreciated if someone could share information about connection details My dell inspiron 501 laptop has only the VGA port. The lowest resolution that...

Your dell should pick the TV up as a monitor if you have the VGA cable connected. The vga cable has a blue color on the TV but on the laptop, the color of the port is usally brown or dark in color. Windows should pick up on the new device and enable it. The Dell has an Fn key combination to allow you to toggle through the integrated / external monitor choices that you would have with two monitors active, that being clone both desktops to both monitors, extend the desktop from the laptop to the TV, use only the tv and turn the integrated off, use just the integrated and leave the TV off. The key combination is: Fn + F8

Dell Inspiron 6000 to TV

On a dell laptop, the key combo FN  F8 cycles through the display options. Laptop screen, External screen, Laptop and External screen at the same time.  Try pressing the FN F8 key to get the video to display on both laptop and lcd and the same time.  If that doesn't work you can also change the settings on what the laptop does when the lid is closed.  Check the power settings in the control panel.

The PC card you have doesnt appear to work with that adaptor. Dell Has its own Svideo / Video output adaptors.

You need a converter not an adaptor. Try looking on Amazon for this: ITV-900 PC to TV Converter
