Tone arm retracts before recording is complete (CR-245)

We received a Crosley CR-245 for Christmas. When recording, the tone arm retracts and cuts off part of the song. The problem is intermittent, not specified to either 45's, 78's or 33 1/3's. Can anyone help us with this problem?

The nickel on the tone arm is the best solution that I have found. I taped a nickel onto the head of the tone arm about 1/4 inch back from the point of the stylus and then taped 3 quarters near the fulcrum to slightly counterweight the nickel's effect. This fixed one of the disc skiing that my Crosley had when I first got it. A new stylus is in the mail and I will try the new needle without the nickel and quarters to see if the original needle was just bad.

Actual old units (not sure about modern nostalgics) sometimes had a lever that said 7 or 12 inches for 45's or 33's this would tell the mechanism when to set down the arm. If your unit does not have something like this then it sounds like an internal failure that would require it being opened by a tech or sent in for warranty repair.

My turntable a Crosley CR49 is about 14 years old. It plays just fine, but have to manually reset, clicking the tone arm after every record I play, either 45s or 33 1/3. How Can I fix this?

You will need to get to the underside of the turntable. There you should find that the arm when it gets to the centre of the record it will push on a switch. This switch might be out of position or just get stuck by grease or dirt. Correcting it should solve the problem.

Crosley CR6019A turntable skips

Hi
Being a portable model, it is very easy not to have the turntable level. It is very important that it is level as a tilt can lead to the head "skipping", amongst other things.

Another possible problem is that the balance has become upset by being moved around. The correct balance is achieved b the positioning of a weight on the tone arm on the opposite end to the needle. This can usually be moved short distances to balance the tone arm so that the needle is held in the record groove, by the minimum necessary weight on the needle.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers

How can I stop the tone arm from returning too early on smaller records?

The adjustment for auto return position is normally at the tone arm base on the left side under a rubber grommet. Use a flat blade screw driver to move adjustment screw, then test. Keep fine tuning until arm lifts at desired position. Cheers John. Stylus City NZ

Tone arm keeps returning to rest on Crosley CR249

Hi, Try this. with it turned off. Lift tone arm across a record to the run out groove and set it down. Now power up and hopefully it will reset itself. In all honesty I would sell it and get a decent old school player. John. Styluscity.com

Hi. I have a Crosley CR40 mini turntable. When I turn on the power, the vinyl spins but when the needle is placed on the vinyl, the vinyl doesnt move anymore while the spinner underneath it is still...

It sounds like you have too much pressure on the tone arm. Check the underside for springs. You might be able to remedy the problem the old fashioned way. Tape a coin onto the top of the tone arm, as far to the rear as possible. This will eliminate some of the downward pressure onto the record.

How do you shift to play records. When I turn to phono on dial it turns the unit off. I have a radio cd player with CR24 turntable

Move the tone arm off the rest on to the record and it will start to spin. There is a switch that turns the player off when the tone arm is on the rest.

My brandnew Songwriter is not playing records properly. When a quarter is placed on the tone arm, it plays fine. Is there an adjustment I can make??? Marilyn

I didn't see the tone arm balance adjustment in the user manual, however that is what needs to be done. At the rear of item #39, on page 10, is there a dial with numbers from 0 to 4 or 5? If so, set the dial to "0" to see if the tone arm will "balance" (like a see saw) If not, the dial assembly (which is a weight) needs to be slid either forward or backwards to achieve balance. After balancing, turn the dial to a number higher than 0 to increase tracking force..keep increasing the tracking force until it stops skipping, but no more than necessairy. To much force causes wear/damage to albums. If there is no tracking force adjustment on the tone arm, I would suggest contacting Crosley @ http://www.crosleyradio.com/Support.aspx
Hope this helps.

Tone Arm skips past first song

Hello, A. Do not try to close the case when there is a record inside!! The fact that the turntable cannot do this is not a design flaw--you'll be hard pressed to find a portable turntable that can close with a record inside because if you were to pick up the player with one inside, it could easily slip off of the spindle and scratch against the sides of the player.
B. Are you using the cueing lever to lift the tone arm before you place it on the record? Read the instructions to see where the cuing lever is (it's a little switch on the right side of the tone arm). When you lift it, the tone arm will lift up and allow you to position it wherever you want on a record, then you depress the lever to make the tone arm touch the record and being playing.
I hope that helps!
