Question about GE (PSS26MSRSS) Side by Side Refrigerator

2 Answers

On GSH25KGRBB fridge, water stopped.

Water dispenser is used constantly. Just stopped. Got advise to leave door open, (seal opening to frozen food) to defrost water line. Also unplugged water feed at bottom. Water is being distributed to door.
Its been opened for 7 hours now and it still won't work. Ran small 14 guage wire in from the bottom and went all the way to top and hit something I presumed is ice. Ran from dispenser and it stopped about 7 inches in. The end of the wire was cold after this little effort. SO, what is behind the dispenser, a coil or is the plastic water line coiled in a circle or what? Could there be something else blocking? After 7 hours, I would think the ice would melt......

I had this problem and solved it by : 1.First time,I used hair dryer and left door open for about and hour.
2. Second time,I had to replace my filter,it was slowing and needed replaced anyway,I guess the lower H2O pressure due to the clogged filter was enough to allow the line to freeze. Hope this helps!

GE refrigerator freezer water dispenser failure GSH25JFTA

Some have said that if you are fridge is still making ice, then your water line may be frozen. So you need to let it thaw out by leaving the freezer door open. Figure out somewhat to try and keep the cold air in by using plastic sheeting or something, until the line thaws. You can't dispense water with the door open, so reach up press the button that makes it think its closed and try to dispense the water..or just shut the door to test it out. I am going to try this when I get home today, because I am having the same problem on my GE model# GSH25JFTA BB.

Water dispenser on refrigerator not working but ice maker is making ice

Most likely a frozen line... If you can hear a faint pump noise near filter when you try to dispense wate, that tells you the pump is woking. rIt could be a frozen reservoir(located on fridge side behind vegetable bins) or the line that runs thru freezer door to the dispenser. Use a hair dryer to thaw out reservoir or try to turn off the unit for a few hours. (That did it for me). If it's the line in freezer door, shut off unit, open freeezer door for a few hours and seal off freezer with a towel or cardboard to keep all frozen. If not this, may be a clogged water line from filter or a bad valve.

Try the dispenser to see if it's just drips after use.
You have two points where you can check the dispenser water. At the rear where the water supply comes in is the water inlet valve. If you disconnect the dispenser water line and then see if the water comes out when you try the dispenser. You should hear the valve work when you try the dispenser. If you don’t hear it there is a dispenser actuator switch problem. If you do hear it but water doesn’t work here there is a valve or water supply problem. If it's normal, disconnect it at the bottom of the freezer door and try again. If it's normal here it may be frozen in the door. If this is the case open the door till it thaws. A blanket over the opening will prevent thawing of all the food.

Easiest way to thaw out a possible frozen water reservoir in my GE side by side fridge?

Hair dryer is the easiest way to thaw. To find cause: Remove lower grill and disconnect the water line going through the freezer2_bing.gif door hinge. Usually it is a push lock fitting, which requires you to push the ring2_bing.gif on the end of the fitting toward the center of the fitting while pulling (not hard) on the plastic tube. Now place a pan under the separated plastic hose and try the water dispenser. If water comes out, your problem is a frozen water line in the freezer door. A warmer freezer temp may help, or you can order and install a WR49X10173 water tube heater2_bing.gif. (the heater may take 24 hours to thaw the line, but I have used it successfully several times. Cost about $50) If no water comes out the separated tube when you try to dispense water, reconnect the tube at the hinge by pushing the plastic line back into the fitting. Now, at the back of the refrig., disconnect the water line going from the water valve to the fresh foods compartment. Try to dispense water. No water at valve outlet = bad valve. Water dispensed from valve now = frozen water filter2_bing.gif or water line at back bottom of fresh foods compartment. (make sure you disconnect the right tube. If in doubt, disconnect them both, just get them back correctly so your icemaker continues to work) Send me additional comments if needed. Don't rate before you try all the steps.

If water filter or water line/ reservoir is frozen, thaw with a hair dryer. If reservoir is frozen, check to make sure there is no frost on back wall of inside freezer, preventing normal air flow, allowing cold air to enter fresh foods compartment through return air vent at lower back of fresh foods compartment, resulting in freezing of water line / reservoir and possibly food in bottom bin.

My whirlpool suddenly stopped dispensing water.

most fridges stop dispensing water when you open the door. Find the door switch and make sure fridge interior light goes on/off when you manually press door switch. This would show you that the door switch was faulty.

If the water connection to the appliance is one of those watts flood-safe water lines, it may have stuck shut. I've seen this happen when the house water pressure is too high.

Does it still make ice?

If so, then the water connection is good, and either the switch in the water dispenser has failed or the water shutoff valve for the water dispenser has gone bad.

Some models have a problem with the water line getting frozen, such that simply leaving the light on in the water dispenser compartment overnight and/or manually defrosting the unit can get it working again.

There is also a screen filter in the water supply where it connects to the water inlet valve. It may be stopped up with sediment.

The frigde stopped dispensing water. I replaced the inside the fridge water filter, but it still doesn't dispense water. The ice maker is ok so it's getting water. Any ideas on what I can try next?

Your water line could be frozen in the door. You can disconnect the line under the unit before it goes into the door at the bottom hinge. Push the dispenser button and see if it comes out there. If it does leave the door open till it thaws

OR
disconnect the line to the water dispenser at the water inlet valve on the back where the water supply comes in and try the dispenser. if you hear the valve work but water doesn't come out, the valve is bad. If you don't hear the valve, the dispenser switch is bad.

Water dispenser doesnt work, ice dispenser works fine

1) remove the tubing connector behind refrig kickplate . Press for water . If no water comes from tube under refrig , then possibly frozen tank but probably not . Probably bad water inlet valve . ( tank is in the lower potrion of the refrig section behind the crispers ) .
2) if water does shoot out , then your freezer door is frozen which requires leaving door open and tapeing light switch closed and tape plastic around freezer section opening so fridge will continue to operate normally . Thawing freezer door could take a day or 2 . 3) You can plug the hoses back togather and walk by occasionally pressing water untill comes out . Lower your freezer temperature setting also ( could be set for too cold)

Water dispenser not working ice maker is fine

The refrigerator has a dual water valve. The water dispenser side of the valve may be defective, but, my experience has shown the problem to be in the water reservoir, located in the bottom of the fresh food section, which, might be frozen or the water line through the freezer door is frozen. Scenario #1: Remove the kick panel, disconnect the water line from the fitting. Have someone depress the water actuator, while, holding a cup to collect any water which may come through the line. If water comes through the tube. The problem is a frozen water line in the door. My best advice for this problem is to remove any frozen goods from the door. Take a piece of cardboard and seal the freezer section of the refrigerator with any kind of tape. Make sure you tape the door switch in the closed position, so, the refrigerator will continue it's normal operation. The frozen goods will remain frozen and the fresh food section will be okay. Leave the freezer door open. You might want to put a towel under the door. The water line will thaw. It might take 15 minutes. It might take 3 hours. Periodically check the water dispenser operation. When the water flows remove the cardboard. Scenario # 2:if, after disconnecting the water line and depressing the water actuator there is not water. The reservoir is frozen. Use a hair dryer to that the reservoir. You will have to remove at least a couple of crisper drawers to perform this action. The cause of a reservoir freeze is too little stuff in the drawers or too low a temp in the crisper drawer area.
