The touch devicce on my laptop which can either mute or un-mute the sound is locked on mute and won't change no matter how I touch it. I was wondering if there is anyway I can do this through the computer as opposed to touching it.

try installing proper drivers for the AUDIO CARD! the orange led only indicates the HTK HOTKEYdrivers are working properly, it does NOT says a thing about audio card drivers! so i suggest you to install proper drivers for audio playback!
I have had similar problems with a hp notebook in the past, although it was the wireless button, not the mute button.
I think you need to remove and then install the sound card driver. You can download the sound card from here: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp41001-41500/sp41479.exe
download it, save it to the desktop. open control panel, then device manager, then expand sound, video and game controllers. right click on the IDT device and select uninstall, and tick remove driver when prompted. Once the uninstall is complete, restart the computer and then run the above file you have downloaded by right clicking on it and selecting "Run as Administrator". When finished, reboot, and hopefully your problem is solved.
1st check would be to see if the mute button is active on the soft keys if not. go into the control pannel switch to classic view open "sound" ( for windows vista and "sounds and audio devices" ( for windows XP) make sure that all of the mute tick boxes at the bottom of the volume control are un-ticked, hope this helps
I'm using the same laptop right now and have been for 3 years and I didn't know there was a key combo. Can you go into Start, Control Panel, Sounds and Audio Devices? If you can then you can unmute there.
go to compaq.com and reinstall the hot-key software for your laptop. seems to be a bad driver, could also be bad hardware though, if it is bad hardware you may be looking for someone to take it apart to fix it. more than likely though it is a driver which can be fixed with just installing new software.
The first thing I would do is check to see if any of your speaker settings are muted. You can check this by either double-clicking on the speaker icon by the clock, or by going into the control panel and opening up "Sounds and Audio Devices". Then, click on advanced. Un-Mute any muted devices.
