Question about Carrier XHB123D X/Y Series Heat/Cool Air Conditioner

Old Gravity Heater kicks off too soon

I'm a novice, but I checked the system over - nothing is wrong with it except its age. Its almost 60 years old. I opened up the fan control box. when I twist the dial counter clockwise the unit would light up. The off is set at 100, the on at 150 and the limit at 200.
Is the unit getting hotter than it should? or is m fan controller not working properly
Thanks

Those are pretty good settings. I might set the fan off to about 85 to get a bit more heat from it. Otherwise you're good. Please give me a fixya rating.

Squirrel cage installation.

If there is strong air flow blowing into the house the sq. cage should be OK. Possibly you need to replace the pads and make sure that the pump is not clogged and is distributing enough water to keep the pads wet.

Loud bang, sounds like the motors going to drop out when the compresser kicks on,17 years old, relpace/repair

The actual internal motor in the compressor dome is mounted on springs. Over time these get weak and hence the loud bang noise when the motor hits the sidewall of the compressor housing. It is not too serious and will probably work for ages. Just anoying. Leave it until it really packs up.

WHEN THE HEATER COMES ON THE FAN STARTS INSTANTLY AND BLOWS COLD

Do you have a heat pump? If so this is normal. You are probably used to a gas furnace. There are heat pumps that do have a delay though. Look on the circuit board in the air handler. There may be a set of pins that say 0-30-60-90 yours may be at 0. Also some digital T-stats offer that function for delay off to get the extra heat or cold from the system. Find out what the model number of the air handler and call the Goodman supplier in your area to see if you have these options.
If you have a gas furnace and it's not delaying the blower there is definately something wrong.

I have a 20 year old honeywell quartz air/heating control. I'm not really sure how to use the heater. It has two separate toggles at the top (one blue and one red), a button that you push "up" at the...

The Blue knob is for cooling the red for heating. I would reccomend replacing it due to the fact the age and it probably has yrs of dust built up on the mercury bulbs which can throw the tempurature off. Dust on these old mecury style thermostats is its worst enemy. The bulb is very sensitve and enough dust can throw the bulb of several degrees.

Installed a new hot water heater in July and water is brown in one of the bathrooms what is the cause?

Sounds like your pipe may not be to healthly, internally that is. probably any of the same age will soon end up rusting out as well. Any fixtures in the system that look corroded at the faucet? How old is your home? 35-40 yr old pipes are about as good as it gets.
