Acer 5100 not booting up after I downloaded a software patch

After my laptop popped up telling me that it is recommended to download a new software patch, I downloaded it. Now my laptop does not boot up and after running its self diagnosis, I am told to contact the manufacturer for help since the laptop could not restore its bootup to before downloading the patch. What are my options and how can I get my laptop back to work?my acer 5100 also failed after an update, have not been able to boot for about a week. Have downloaded a boot disc and a recovery disc with no success. have tried F8,F12 with no success. Any one else experiencing this problem?

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

There could be 2 ways to address your concern:

  • if there are files in the laptops hard drive that you would want to recover before doing a full format & re-install, said hard drive must be removed, attached to a 2.5 SATA/IDE to USB adapter and connect to your 2nd computer. If able to do this, you can scan/clean the laptop's HD for any possible virus. Additionally, the files you want to recover would be available to be copied to the 2nd PC;
  • change the CMOS/BIOS settings to boot from CD, save & exit. Pop in a Windows installer CD or your recover CDs and follow closely on-screen instructions.
A few more ideas you may want to consider:
  • if it were a virus, perhaps it would be to your advantage to wipe the entire hard drive clean; repartition the HD, re-format & re-install Windows;
  • you can "borrow" a Windows installer CD that matches what your system is using. When prompted for the CD key, use what is printed on the Microsoft sticker at the bottom of the laptop;
  • if you are uncomfortable with any of the steps but would like to try it, it may be to your advantage to seek the assistance of an on-site computer tech or even a neighbor/local "geek".
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Try This.

Get yourself a Windows XP cd ( asuming XP is what your running)

Boot from CD. Bassically . start the laptops with the disk in the drive and let it boot the XP cd as if your trying to re-install windows.

Once the windows install shows up with the blue screen and the options. Press "R" for repaire.

The system will blink, go out and into DOS invironment with a command prompt or asking what windows installation you want to repair. If it asks, press " 1" , if it asks for a password, type in your windows password or leave blank if there isnt one.

Now, When at the command prompt ( C:\ )

You want to typoe this exactly as I put it, " ckdsk C: \p " dont include the quotes. This will run the windows check disk and repair in damaged boot files.

Try this and let me know if you have any trouble with getting this started or if it works,not works. And we can go from there.

    To reinstall the system you can boot from recovery system, and then procede to partial recovery (does not delete files).

    If partial recovery does not work, you run again the recovery disk and this time you chose complete recovery.

    Complete recovery will delete all files into the computer and reinstall the system as new.

    Before doing a complete recovery you need to do a backup of your files, by removing the disk and putting it into an enclosure, and connecting the disk via USB to a different computer.

    The recovery disk will work only if it is the original one for this computer model.

    To boot from recovery disk you can use the boot manager on startup, if present, or you will have to access bios and change boot settings, to boot from CD first.

    If you do not have the original recovery disk, then you can use a generic Windows setup disk for same Windows release as one listed on you Microsoft Genuine Licence sticker at the bottom of your laptop (Eg. Vista home).

    Let me know if you need further help.

    To start you need to have the original recovery disk for this model or to purchase one. Alternatively you can use a generic install disk.

    You simply put the recovery disk inside cd drive and restart the laptop.

    On restart you recall teh boot up menu, this should be one of the F keys, usually it is written at the bottom of the post screen, when computer starts booting.

    If you do not have any boot up menu, then go to bios by pressing f1 on startup, and in BIOS set CD as first boot device , tehn restart teh laptop.

    On restart the laptop will ask you to press a key to boot from CD, press that keys.

    Follow instructions given by recovery disk.

    If you do not have the original recovery cd you can purchase it here for a small fee: Acer Vista Recovery CD Restore Disk

    The recovery disk will reinstall automatically Windows on your computer.

    Restart the computer with Recovery CD inside and chose to boot form CD.

    Once you start CD follow the Acer Recovery procedure as explained here.

Check the driver status of the USB. You can do this by accessing the Device Manager. For users using Windows XP, just click the Start icon. On the Run box, type devmgmt.msc. You can also do the same with Vista.

Next thing, check for devices with an (!) sign with a yellow background. These devices needs driver update or correct driver should be installed.

For a start, you can do a Windows Update. Click Start, All Programs, and then Windows Update. This will download patches for your system.

To list all of the specifications for your Aspire here would take too much space.
You can download the manual directly from Acer for your 5100 series notebook. The manual will provide you all of its specifications. (Click on the link to open Acer's web site);
http://us.acer.com/acer/service.do?LanguageISOCtxParam=en&miu10einu24.current.attN2B2F2EEF=3750&sp=page15e&ctx2.c2att1=25&miu10ekcond13.attN2B2F2EEF=3750&CountryISOCtxParam=US&ctx1g.c2att92=453&ctx1.att21k=1&CRC=2054404012
Once the site opends click, Driver Download located at the left side.
Under, Select Product Family click Notebook. (Not Netbook)
In the next window click, Aspire.
In the third window scroll down & click on, Aspire 5100.
Click the Document button. Lastly, click on the white arror to download the manual. File named: AS5110_5100_3100-ENG-OLM_0616.zip

If you are able, when the pc is booting up keep pressing F8, this will take you to safe mode and not allow the graphics driver to run. When in the safe mode options, select either Last known good configuration or start windows in safe mode. Last known good configuration should find the last good system settings, when it reboots. Start windows in safe mode allows you to go into windows using the administartor account, and then you should select system restore and restore back to the day before or just before you updated the graphics driver.
