Question about HP Compaq Presario 2500 HP Pavilion ZE 5000 NX9010 Series (chassis bottom)319470-001 (319470001) CD-ROM Drive

Power Supply Port Burnout

My brother and I both have ze5000 laptops we bought back in 2002. Back in late 2005 we both started having issues when we both mistakenly used the power adapters for another HP Laptop. I maybe used the adapter twice for a short time.

Anyways, not too long afterwards, I noticed the yellow ring on my adapter turned brown, like it had been burned. The pin on the power port had also become loose.

Over the course of over a month the adapter became more and more temperamental until it burnt out.

The only way I can use this laptop now is to use an external battery charger and swap out the laptops. I get about 45 minutes per charge and have to suspend my work to swap out the two batteries. Kind of a big pain.

I want to get it working again. Is there a way to get regualr power working again?

This is not a big deal if I can't get it working. I have a tablet which is equally as old and a new desktop at home. I have a some old files and a few programs to which I have lost the installation discs on that machine.

1) You need to replace the DC Power Jack. This is the port on the laptop where the AC adapter (Charger) plugs in. {Power port}

Most so called repair shops won't touch this. (Notice I stated so called) They will want to replace the entire motherboard. {Geeks are us}

A bona fide computer repair tech can replace the DC Power Jack. Cost of jack? Around $10. Repair bill? From $50 to $125.

[Entire laptop needs to be disassembled, down to the bare motherboard in the tech's hand. Precise de-soldering, and soldering skills, are needed for the DC Power Jack replacement. Reassemble laptop.

This gives you an idea of what is involved,

2) Replace the AC adapter. If the AC adapter has a separate cable from the power unit, to the laptop, then by all means just replace it. May be more of a headache, then just buying a universal AC adapter.

Barring none of the above is a feasible approach for you, and you wish to save the information on the harddrive, of both your laptop, and your brother's, I would suggest an economical external enclosure.

Remove the harddrive, and install it in the external enclosure. The enclosure has a USB cable, and is plugged into any available USB port on a separate computer.
(Desktop?)

The HP Pavilion ZE5000 series of laptops, (Business Notebook's), use an IDE (PATA) harddrive.
It is 2.5 inches across in width.
(Desktop harddrives are 3 and 1/2 inches across in width)

This is one example of a 2.5 IDE (PATA) external enclosure,

To remove the harddrive, I'll need to know the exact Product Number.
(P/N)
This is on the bottom of the laptop in a white Service Tag.
(DO NOT give out the Serial Number. S/N)

How do i do a restore to factory default to a compaq presario with no cds?

Guardian, If you want to remove all SW that you installed and all the data that you have on the computer, then the easiest way is to go to Start->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Restore. Restore your PC/laptop to the earliest date that you can. The restorable date would be in bold numerals. Go backwards as far as you can and select the oldest bold date. The laptop would take a reboot after sometime. Do not panic. Just follow the instructions. Should you want the data for you, then back it up before restoring.Backup to a CD or a DVD.

Toshiba A30 LAPTOP

No lights is not good. Power supply issue fo sure. Check th epower supply cable to your laptop. Are you running it on battery, or from a wall socket. Are you using it via a safety surge board, make sure the se are all funtioning too. If still nothing, you may have to take it to a repair shop as power suply may be damaged. Also if system has 110v/220v switch on back make sure it is set to 110v, and try again. Good luck lilacgerry xxx
