I was afraid to keep using the oven

There was a Very Loud pop when my wife turned the oven on and she turned it off imediately. I turned it back on and it made a Grumbling noise so I turned it off AND DIDNOT try it again. I don't know if it was still cooking or not.

By grumbling noise do you mean like a zapping kind of electrical sparks?

Look to see if there may be a small piece of metal, or aluminum somewhere in the oven or in the food, also it may be the utensil you have the food in is not microwave safe.

The Microwave oven won't hurt you microwaves are about the size of a pencil.

The oven sparks and gives a loud hum during use with plastic food containers. This scares my wife and mom terribly. I have an Emerson 900W microwave oven (model:MW8999SB).

It seems as though the container has a small amount of metal embedded in it ... don't assume just because it is plastic you can put it in the microwave.
Tip ... put just the plastic container in empty and try it. If the plastic get hot then it's the wrong type plastic for a microwave

Oven made loud pop. Now does not heat and is loud. Light goes on, turntable turns. No heating

Had the same problem. It was the high voltage rectifier. Bought replacement part at Sears online for about $16 (including shipping) and replaced myself. Not too difficult, but you need to be VERY CAREFUL to discharge the capaciter. You can even leave it mounted, while fixing it. Just remove upper plastic vent covering, which exposes the mounting screw for the control panel. Unscrew and slide the panel up to dismount. You will need to disconnect all the wire attachements to the control panel. I took a digital photograph to ensure I could reconnect exactly as it was originally arranged. The part is attached to the capacitor in the back of the unit - MAKE SURE THE CAPACITOR IS DISCHARGED FIRST.

A couple notes:
  • I had read other postings saying that other parts would probably need to be replaced, as their shorting likely caused the failure of this part. However, I traced the shorting to excess moisture - my wife was boiling a lot of pasta on the stove for an event. Once dried out, the short was gone.
  • The replacement piece is shaped a little differently and can obscure the internal fan. This can cause the unit to overheat and the circuit breaker to fail, which I found out the hard way (a much more difficult--yet still unexpensive--repair). I used some electrical tape to make sure it stayed out of the way.
It has been about two months since the repair and it is working well.

Clean well the inside of the oven, if you keep having the problem and the inside is clean, then the magnetron is starting to go.

Microwave

That's probably because there's still steam (humidity) in the cavity after the first bag is popped.

After the first bag pops, try wiping down the walls and ceiling and leaving the door open for a couple of minutes.

You might even blow or fan the air out of the microwave.

The magnetron is bad. Probably cost about $50 or $60 for the part. Not too easy to replace, but it can be done.
