Hardware malfunction - The system has halted

I have some problems to startup my IBM intelliStation M Pro after trying to get BIOS and change it to start first the CD-Rom driver before the hard drive (C). Why? The reason is that I want to install UBURNTU by a CD. To get in BIOS (?), I pressed "Ctrl + A". Curiously, I found 15 devices, but only 2 are used. The device #2 which is used for (C) the hard drive and #7 the CD-Rom? (I suppose, not sure because I don't have knowledge of technical and computer). Others are written "no device". I check everything and went to everywhere I can move with the arrow (right, left, up, and down), I didn't find anything is said: "Hard Drive" and "CD-Rom" device. After all, I have changed nothing. When I took "exit", I was carefully about "yes and no", before pressing to any letter to "boot" the system as it is required.

After this, when I turn on my computer, I get this error message and it's said: "Hardware malfunction. Call your hardware vendor for support. *** The system has halted**

I tried several time from morning and evening to get start, but it didn't working. Currently, my monitor is dark likely it is not connected to the hard drive. The 3 lights (power, hard drive, and CD-Rom) of the destop are solid green, but the left one is flashing slowly. The power light of the monitor is orange, not green. Usually, when it's connected, it's green. So I don't know what to do. Could you help and tell me what to do, I will be very appreciate. Here are my questions:

1) How I can do to get start again my computer and connect again to my monitor?
2) How I do to get into BIOS and see Hard Drive and CD-ROM?
3) How to change my computer to startup at first the CD-ROM drive?

Doua Yang I get a hardware Malfunction blue screen also. I have to reboot ( sometimes 3-6 times) and then I can use. How do I fix this? Thanks.

Follow the link below for instruction on how to access and change boot orders in bios. I also have a section in my profile that has a couple tips that explain this also.

IBM IntelliStation M Pro 6219-10u How to update the bios with a USB pen drive as my floppy drive is not working.

As it is obvious you do not have the necessary skills or knowledge I would advise you against any attempt to do this.

The ONLY reason to perform a BIOS update is if there is a significant change in the BIOS firmware which will solve a problem you may be having.

If you have no problem-Don't try to fix it!

BIOS updates should only be carried out by people with a working knowledge of systems. If done incorrectly you can render your system inoperable.

I do not advise this to demean you in any way, just to help you.

My USB ports suddenly quit working on my IBM Z Pro 6221 59U

Check the actual ports, visual inspection. Look for consistancy of the pins, and guide. If one is bent or missing, that can short out the ports, or blow out the integrated circuit.

If you are using a usb keyboard, try to start up and go into the setup using the keyboard. If you can, the driver for the ports might be damaged, causing the problem in windows, but not in the bios startup.

You can purchase a usb board that can give you new ports, and deleting the usb hub from the hardware manager (check help) and re-detecting the device might repair a damaged driver.

Hardware malfunction - The system has halted

to get into the bios, you either need to press F1, delete or F2 as the computer boots. Look very carefully at the screen when it boots because it will only tell you briefly what key you need to press on your keyboard. Once you have got into bios use your cursor keys to get to the correct page where it will tell you the boot options. Then change the boot options to your preference and save the changes and exit.

You are right about the monitor though, it will not come on if your computer doesn't boot correctly.

IBM Blue Screen

I had the same problem with an Intellistation 6868 for years. It just wouldn't load XP but ran fine on Windows 2000 SP4. I tried 3 different XP Installation CD's with no luck. After several attempts at installing XP I bought a clean XP Upgrade from ebay.

It took me 3 goes to install it but eventually I got it in there. If you can get XP to start on the 6868 press F8 and start it in safe mode first then when it's booted fully, shut it down and and then start it clean again. It worked for me. I've been running it for 5 months now and it's fine.

I couldn't get it to work at all on the 6868's onboard IDE so I installed a PCI Raid Card and it boots fine on that.
