Is there any way to make this hands free so the bar code light is always on? On my old one I set it in the cradle and it was heavy enough to hold down the button. When I set this new scanner in the cradle it doesn't even come close to pushing the button. Am I missing something?

If the scanner is connected through USB connection, the barcode should appear in the Notepad. If you use the Serial connection RS232, the Barcode data are showed than in Hyperterminal or other application, which is interpreting data from Serial Port.
Please scan the barcode from Product Guide according to your connection. And check the scanned data in an application - Notepad for Keyboard Wedge or USB, Hyperterminal for RS232.
If you need to have a carriage return/enter after each bar code scanned, scan the following bar codes (from the Product Reference Guide) in order:
1. <SCAN OPTIONS> (on page 12-9)
2. <DATA> <SUFFIX> (on page 12-10)
3. Enter (on page 12-11)
You might try Magic JellyBean Keyfinder. I know, funny name, but it works! just type Magic JellyBean Keyfinder in your browser search bar, or paste and copy this link into your address bar, http://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder/
Jaquino, there is a programming bar code to reset the device to factory settings in the user guide. I know you said that it is reading other bar codes like they are not programming bar codes, but have you tried this bar code? Usually it works, even when the device is totally hosed, unless there is some kind of hardware failure.
Here's the link to the Quick Start from the company website: http://www.handheld.com/download.aspx?download=/data/f9e7f996-9ecc-4f49-b604-32fbd754085d.pdf&filename=3800+Linear+Series+Quick+Start
The factory reset bar code is on printed page 4 of the PDF document.
For future reference, the cable is easily detached by inserting the straight end of a paper clip into the pinhole at the bottom of the handle where the cable attaches.
I would not recommend attempting to repair this device yourself. You could cause more damage than you already have. Since the device has a 5 year warranty, it may still be under warranty. The charge for reconnecting everything, if there is no damage, should be minimal.
unfortunately it appears that you do not have sufficient Contrast for your barcodes, this will make scanning them difficult, that with the added issues of wear & fading makes the use of barcoded passcards difficult. it's probably better to use RFID or Magstripe cards for this application
