The WPA key is the encryption key that is configured in the router's wireless settings and the wireless cards in the laptop and desktop needs to be configured with this encryption setting to allow the laptop and desktop computer to communicate with the router.
You can view the encryption settings in the router's wireless settings or on the laptop's wireless card settings and then apply these encryption settings to the desktop's wireless card (ie. the SSID and the WPA encryption).

try putting the wireless router closer to the computer but not right beside maybe theres interference with something, your built in wireless in the laptop is prob way stronger than the cards you got there are different ranges for different cards and if you get a low card it wont connect to high speeds or longer distances and make sure your connecting to your routers wireless and not someone elses wireless router, it sounds stupid but it happens ive did it before make sure the right drivers are on the computer for the card you installed hope one of those helps

One card interfering with other connections

Have you checked to make sure the laptop wireless NIC isn't acting as an AP by mistake? That could explain both desktop and laptop connectivity issues. Just a thought.

Can't see any wireless networks in the area, but I know there are many

Can your other laptop see the laptop with the problem. First check that it is being given an IP address in your router and set to obtain IP address automatically. You may need to give the wireless card an ip address and DNS address yourself within the same range as the others; this way you know the addresses are correct. Just check that your problem laptop has the same network group name, right click my computer>properties>computer name and check the workgroup name is tha same as rest of your pc's. Keep trying you'll win in the end!
