Cant install full 2GB of memory in my emachines t3990
I purchased (2) 1 gb memory sticks both the same. They are 1gb ddr400. I can install either one or the other with one of the original 256mb sticks and it turns on fine. I tested both 1gb sticks and they work. When I install both 1gb sticks together though my computer screen will not turn on. My computer is rated for 2gb. It is a emachines t3990. It has an intel motherboard d865gvhz. I was told a BIOS update may fix my problem, however I go through all the steps and when it reboots it says it was unsuccesful installing it. Any assistance would be great, and if you need more info let me know. Thanks

Try removing the cmos battery and put it again and booting up.. since you have bought same kind of ram i dont think it could be a problem.also check for the jumpers in *********** board where you can reset your bios. be sure to read *********** boards manual before this

I don't know your specific model, but some of the Emachines had some memory directly on the motherboard. With the 1Gb and 512Mb sticks installed, boot the machine and report how much memory the system sees. Perhaps the onboard memory is causing you to exceed the 2Gb limit.
Please post the memory size you get here with the above sticks.
Will it boot with only ONE of the 2GB memory-sticks installed?
Will it boot with ONE of the 2GB memory-sticks AND one of the 1GB memory-sticks?
Look closely at the 1GB memory-sticks.
Does the label show 'DDR266' or 'DDR333' or 'DDR400' or 'PC2100' or 'PC2700' or 'PC3200' ?
Do the 2GB memory-sticks have _identical_ information?
It's definitely _not_ acceptable to have "slower" RAM (smaller numbers) in the new RAM,
but it _might_ be acceptable to have "faster" RAM (larger numbers).
From what I read on their site you need 1 stick of DDR2 memory built for 2GB. Open the machine and see how many memory slots you have. The site said 1 but sometimes there are 2 slots for them. If there are 2 slots but only 1 is filled then you need 2 sticks of ram built for 1GB each. If there is only 1 slot then you need 1 stick built for 2 GB. Pop the old RAM out and install the new RAM. Power the system up.
Yes you can upgrade 1 of the slots to 1GB, as long as 1GB stick of memory is the 256MB stick then you can have both, to check the memory you will have pull them out of the slots and have a look on a little sticker on one side of them. You are looking for i.e DDR400/333/266 if the 1GIG memory matches one of the values mentioned above, say it is a DDR400 and the 256 is a DDR400 then they are compatable if not you will have to just leave the 1GIG stick in by it self in DIMM socket 1.
According to SiS® official document, SiS® 748 chipset has limitation DDR supports: CPU at FSB 200MHz mode, it will NOT support DDR400 CPU at FSB 333MHz mode, it will NOT support DDR200 CPU at FSB 400MHz mode, it will NOT support DDR200/DDR266 Depends on chipset http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=K7S8XE
it depends, you will want to check the type of memory first, and make sure you are purchasing the correct type. Also, if you have memory slots that are different colors, you will want to put the memory in two similar colors. also, i would advise buying a set of 2 1gb sticks of ram that are dual-channel capable, and removing the old memory. Otherwise the old stick of memory will significantly slow down the speed the new stick can run at. Memory is extremely cheap at newegg.com, you can get 2gb ddr2 ram for under $30.
