Question about Toshiba D-VR650

Toshiba D-VR650 can't tape says canot record protected image

When trying to tape some channels a message appears that says can not record protected image. This happens on 3 channels. I can tape on 2 channels. The VCR is set up to digital. We do not have any kind of dish TV. We are using the box. I would like to be able to record on the VCR and watch a different channel on the TV. We also tape during the day when we are gone. So I would like to tape on all the channels. Before we switched over to the digitial we we able to tape all the channels on the VCR. Also the for our main channels the size of the picture is smaller. How do we make the picture to the full size of the screen.
Thanks

Unfortunately, this is a product of the modern/digital world. The entertainment industry wants every single person to buy the product, such as DVDs or music CDs. To that end, the TV channels are coded to prevent you from saving the content. About your only choice is to use an external converted and record the analog video. You will lose quality, but in most cases will still get the signal. As far as the image size on the screen, that is becuase of conversions between video formats. The recorder makes assumptions about the size of your screen, which apparently don;t match reality. You can try to contact the VCR manufacturer or check their website for hints.

I forgot to mention thay it may be truly illegal to record the shows. You can try HULU or Amazon for very inexpensive shows soon after they are broadcast.

THERE IS A TAB ON THE VCR TAPES IT CAN BE BROKEN OUT TO KEEP PEOPLE FROM TAPING OVER YOUR PERSONAL TAPES.LOOK AND SEE IF THIS IS NOT BROKEN OUT. IF IT IS PUT SOME TAPE OVER IT AND IT WILL RECORD ON THAT TAPE AGAIN.

I have a Toshiba dvr 7 vcr dvd recorder. It occasionally gives an error message 85 when I am trying to copy a VHS tape to DVD. What does this mean and is there a way around it?

Commercial movie VHS tapes have copyright protection added to the tape. There is hardware in the recorder (mandated by law) that will sense this signal and not allow copying of these tapes to another tape or any other media. There are hackers that have built devices and modified equipment to circumvent this, but you risk legal action if caught.

Won't allow recording ESPN and other cable channels.

It sounds like the programs are copy protected. I've had the problem with an E 27 error, but I've had success with recording other programming.

I cannot record copy-protected tapes to DVD on my RCA DVD recorde

Here is a link to the installation guide for your Pioneer model - refer to every bit of information on p. 29 (which will refer you to some pertinent info in Ch.1): http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pio/pe/images/portal/cit_11221/98391312Installation%20Guide%20DVR-810HS.pdf

If it will not permit you to do the recording:
You have to use a backdoor method. Inspect your TV and see if it has a yellow jack labelled video OUT or monitor OUT - many TV's do not have them. If you are one of the lucky ones that has a video OUT:
1) Connect a VCR to one of the televisions inputs.
2) Connect a red, white and yellow cable from the video and audio OUTs of your TV to either INPUT 1 or 2 on your DVD recorder
3) Make sure that your DVD recorder is set to either INPUT 1 or INPUT 2 - reading the manual for that model is driving me up the wall - I would change the channel on the DVD Recorder (not the TV) to 2 and use the channel down button until it says Input 1 or Input 2 - whichever the appropriate choice is
4) Play the VHS tape and make sure that you can see the picture on your television screen.
5) Press Record on the DVD recorder

Good luck- I would go insane trying to use that Pioneer - it is user-friendly, but not techie-friendly.
