Question about Grundig Satellit 800 AM/FM/SW Radio

Grundig 800 Satellit

Radio works fine on FM, but on AM and SW Bands it oscillates, though the stations are received, the oscillation makes it impossible to pick up the audio. I have the same problem. Good FM but nothing elsewhere apart from atmospherics. Help....................

There are no batteries inserted unless there is an internal battery? Is there?

  • philip1302 Feb 13, 2009

Thank you but alas, it is still not the solution. I can hear FM perfectly and after a lot of button pushing, I managed to tune AM also but, SW and LW are beyond me. Just atmospherics. Any other ideas?

Hi Robert. Hoped that would be the solution but of the two capacitors I can see, they appear to be perfect. I'm in Israel and doubt if there is any service dept., for this unit and I'm not in this field. Any other suggestions? Hammer maybe?

The AM tuning is performend by a chip that is replacing the variable capacitor used on old radio sets.
This has a problem and that is the reason why you get no signal on AM.
Another possible reaso is a broke solder joint on internal board.

Both problems can only be fixed by having a technician working at the radio.

Hi there
Do you live near electricity pilons or a radio or mobile phone mast? Any of these could be causing interference with the long wave and short wave frequencies, all you will get in this case is atmospheric noise.

Good luck and thanks for using Fixya!!

Am bands are terrible for interference, even if you have it close to TV is will have interference, this because of the static electricity in the air. I suggest to try moving the radio to a different location to see if the interference clears up.

    Good luck

THese units use FETs for the front end IF amplifier stages. If any of them are noisy (beginning to fail) the result will be as you describe. Usually this shows up as AM working but the others not. I don't know the exact design of your specific unit, but this is not likely to be traced remotely. In order to determine the cause, a signal will need to be traced. This is done with a signal generator that can generate the IF signals directly. Each stage in the unit will need to be traced. Unfortunately, yu will need to send this is to a service center. Most local shops will not have the required test equipment for tracing this.

Must be a breakdown of the RF amplifier stage for the AM reception. I would get another one. Highly technical

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

If the unit was functioning before clearly on the AM & SW bands, then it would be a hardware fault internal to the frontend of the tuner/receiver; could be a preamp transistor of the 1st mixer/oscillator.

If the unit is new and the AM & SW has never worked before, then 2 possibilities are:

  • insufficient antenna;
  • RFI (radio frequency interference).
One way to improve reception is with the use of an external or enhanced antenna. The interference on the other hand could be addressed by either removing the source of the interference (florescent lamps, wireless phones, lamps with electronic ballasts, lamp dimmers and others of the such).

Would appreciate a postback. Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

hammer is tempting... there should be more then two... did you run your finger along the tops of them... i had one bad capacitor on a monitor i worked on and i almost missed it with just a visual inspection.

If there is strong AC appliances noise nearby radio, it will make impossible to listen AM and SW band station sound.
You can confirm your radio to take it some where else and check AM and SW reception there.

It seems there is a problem with the antenna, for AM and SW bands  stronger antenna is needed, so try replacing the antennae with a bigger one.
    thanks.

Why no am reception on grundig 800 millinium satelite radio

It depends on your location. Set reception mode to AM waves. Dial in the frequency of the station or enter it using the keypad. To tune in on a station, rotate the radio.

SW reception is very poor. Can receive no Ham operators only powerful broadcasts like Havanna. AM not bad, FM fair.

SW transmission depends on an atmospheric layer called the ionosphere. The density of ionized atoms present in the layer is dependent on the light from the sun and on solar activity. The rule of thumb is to tune in to the larger meter bands ( 49m, 41 m, 31m, 25m ) in the evening and at night and the shorter meter (31m, 25, 21, ...16, 10) bands in the day.

To tune in to a particular signal you need to know the exact frequency and the broadcast time. You can search the Internet for the frequencies of a particular radio station and the times when that station is broadcasting in direction of your region.

Grundig Satellit 700 World Receiver. AM bands are dead.

Ist Local Oscillator (PLL) stops working. It's desiged with bare minimum feedback to keep it's output reasonably clean. Removing (De-soldering) the screening box reduces losses, but it's still marginal. Something in the osc. circuit is temperature sensitive, so squirting it with freezer spray - or putting the set in the 'frig will get it going again. Have one like this, "Repaired" - been going for about 5 years and just quit again! If I get any better luck next time, I'll re-post this!
