Does anyone have experience of using this A3 colour printer with printing family trees. Any feedback good or bad on this or any other A3 printers would be much appreciated.
I am interested in using the printer for A4 colour printing, especially if its best output really is close to photo quality. Again any feedback on the photo real output would be much appreciated.
Am I expecting too much from the printer? Would I be better to go for a cheaper A3 colour inkjet for the genealogy and getting another inkjet for the photo real out put? If so any sugguestions on printers. Please reply to the newsgroup. Thanks. -- Gerry O Maelearcaidh
My printer has shown the low Color ink/Cover Open indicator light blinking for a little while (normal) indicating it was almost time for a change, but now the Pause Light and Color ink/Cover Open light are both flashing quickly. It does not allow me to setup for a cartridge change as usual. Usually when the ink cartridge finally goes out the ink light goes on steady. This is something I have never experienced. Turning the machine off and back on does not help. Anyone able to give some information? Thanks, Curt

Michael,
For Epson printer warranty/repairs it is always advised to go Direct to Epson themselves. Your problem with the printer sucking ink sounds like one which would have caused Epson, in the UK anyway, to swap out the printer under warranty. None of my customers, in the UK, have had anything but praise for Epson customer support - and that's since I supplied one of the original Epson Stylus Colour Inket printers in 1993/4.
I'm afraid your experience with Sears is typical of the way these non- specialist department stores/mail order companies handle PC & PC Peripheral repairs/warranties - be it in the UK or US.
Hope you have better luck in the future.

I have an Epson Color Stylus II, which can print at 720 dpi. Frankly, I rarely use the color cartridge, and when I do, the printer does the same thing it does in b/w -- it sucks ink. In addition, although I had the printer cleaned a month ago, I had to run the cleaning cycle at least 14 times tonight before getting a nearly-clean printout.
Since I've begun using the printer for my genealogy research business (and my printing volume is not high, so don't think this problem is a high-usage thing), I've become so frustrated with how quickly this machine sucks ink that tonight I taped a 3x5 tally sheet to it so that I can record how few sheets it prints per cartridge.
Oh, and one more thing. If you ever buy a printer from Sears, don't buy a Sears service contract. When I had my machine cleaned this summer, my printer sat in their shop for a month. When I called, they hadn't sent it out yet. Then they sent it from Utah to Florida or something, and when I recieved it two weeks later, it was in this flimsy, jury rigged packing rather than the original packing, which I dropped it off in. In addition, Sears had lost the clip that protects the printer during shipping. Meanwhile, they've sent me four letters, trying to sign me up for an incredibly-expensive service contract extension. Very unprofessional.
I've found a local, reliable company who will clean the printer for $50. Same-day service. I think I'll buy a refurbished HP laser printer from them and get rid of my problems altogether.

Gerry,
The Epson Stylus 1520 is capable of handling paper up to A2 in size - at a reasonable speed too. It uses the same print technology as the Stylus 600 series; which means that its maximum resolution is 1440dpi in full colour (including photo-realistic quality). A good all-round printer - recommended.

Many of the better Ink Jets have little or no memory of their own. They rely on your computer to compose the print. This has two results. The printing is very slow. "Stolen" CPU cycles slow your computer noticeably. When I discovered just how slow my DX2-66 became when printing color, I got an A / B switch and now use my old dot matrix for most printing, & the inkjet for only color, & BW photos. Phil Van Camp
