My laptop HP zd8000 doesn't recognize Seagate external hard drive

My laptop was able to detect the 300GB Seagate external hard drive 2 weeks ago. I connected is again through USB 2.0 today but couldn't see the hard drive. My laptop recognizes other devices connected to USB. On the other hand, my desktop recognize the external hard drive. Please teach me how to solve the problem. Thank you. Tony

My operating system is XP Pro. Thx

I tried all 4 USB ports but still couldn't see the external hard drive.

  • tonytp2 Feb 10, 2009

If it's a virus problem, how could my desktop recognize the hard drive?

    Thanks

I figured out after awhile. Due to net working, I mapped most drives including E: drive which is reserved for external hard-drive, flash drives...

Unmap your E: or F: and open these drive when connecting external hard-drive.

Hi, you may want to try connecting it by USB if you're currently using firewire or the other way around and see if it works. If this fails, you are probably better off using diagnostics by Seagate @ http://www.seagate.com/ww/v/index.jsp?vgnextoid=7f4e19e0babfd010VgnVCM100000dd04090aRCRD&locale=en-US#. Try to use the Troubleshooting or FAQ or if you feel comfortable using their utilities, download SeaTools. Hope this be of help to you. Good luck.
