You more than likely have a bad relay or capacitor. Hopefully it is not the compressor. You may want to consider replacing it if is more than 10-12 years old. The other possibility is there is a leak in the freon.

Testimonial: "many thanks. yeah it seems there is a leak in the freon. the unit is 10yrs old so had to get a new one...sadly. Thanks again."

SOURCE: Fridge is warm, freezer is cold!

The defrost cycle is not happening like it should, that's what causes the block of ice (and poor air flow). If you have all that defrosted look at the defrost bi-metal, it usually is a small round disk with a couple wires coming out of it and it's clipped on the coils. When it's cold enough, it passes electricity to the heat elements, when it gets hot enough it "opens" and kills power to the heat elements. If that is bad (swollen cracked or bloated) and not passing electricity to the elements that's the problem. Another item would be the defrost timer itself, if it doesn't work (no clock motor turning) then it will never go into defrost. And the last and usually least expected failure would be the heat element themselves no working. Good job trouble shooting!

SOURCE: zanussi fridge compartment has stopped cooling but freezer is ok

How to check everything
http://www.acmehowto.com/howto/appliance/refrigerator/refrigerator.php

The fridge gets its cold air from the freezer through a vent(damper) between the freezer and fridge. The fan in the freezer blows air through it. There is a flap you adjust with the fridge temp. control. Make sure it's opening and closing when you adjust the fridge temp .

OR.
If the evaporator coils behind the back panel of the freezer are icing up because of auto defrost failure that will stop the circulation of cold air and eventually affect the freezer too.

check defrost timer, defrost heater, defrost thermostat. In most newer models the timer has been replaced by an electronic control board. If the heater and thermostat are ok it’ll be the control.

You can turn the defrost timer till it clicks and everything shuts down. The heater should now come on. If it does, replace the timer. If it doesn't, check the heater and defrost thermostat. Turn the timer again till everything starts back up to end the defrost cycle.

Zanussi fridge freezer not working.

You will need a service call for diagnosis and repair. It could be a faulty thermistor (electronic temperature sensor), or it is low on refrigerant gas and needs a top up. Gas is the most likely reason. Make sure the freezer isn't on an Eco Mode that only deep chills the bottom, and useful if the freezer is nearly empty.

Fridge part now working

Hi and welcome to FixYa. I am Kelly.

What your describing is a result of either an automatic defrosting problem or an Air Damper problem.

Here is what you can do to determine if it is a defrost issue or an Air Damper issue.

1. Unplug the unit
2. Empty the freezer section ONLY contents
3. Place a fan blowing into the freezer section for a little over 2 hours. NOTE: This will make a water mess so be prepared.
4. After the manual defrosting session with the fan re-load the freezer contents and plug the unit back in.
5. Check food section temps in about 4 hours.
NORMAL temps you have an automatic defrost problem
WARM temps you have an Air Damper Problem.

Either of the above will require further troubleshooting or service. At least you will know where to start or... what to tell a service person.

Thanks for using FixYa.
