Could be a simply focus adjustment within the cam software that needs to be done. Or the cam is bad itself try adjusting the focus wheel as well. It may be out of focus. Usually the adjustment is on the lens turn it in or out. Try testing the cam on another computer close by see if it is working well on another computer. If not replace the cam. Try re installing the cam software and driver files. John
If your laptop appears to boot up and the hard disk LEDflashes, then the problem is probably a back light fault. This can be a faultyinverter or a faulty CCFL lamp. eMachines E620-5885 does have a built-in microphone next the webcam. But there isn't a button to manually turn the mic on/off. The microphone is there whenever you need. For example on Windows Live Messenger or Google Talk. And these applications also have feature to test your microphone.
Hope I've been helpfull. If you need more information or assistance, add a comment to this post.
If you have Win 7 or Vista, the drivers are built in to OS. in that case, make sure that the webcam is "unistalled" using Control Panel > Device Manager. Then Add new hardware and the OS should see the webcam and reinstall it automatically.
If you are running XP, you will need this link to the eMachines website for downloading drivers.
Choose Notebook > E Series > E620
Just below the three boxes, you will see a dropdown for the Operating System you have. Choose XP and all available drivers will appear. Download the appropriate driver and install the webcam.
The device may not get detected if the webcam is already in use by any other applciation. Try to sign out of yahoo and any other program that uses a webcam and then try, Also you can search online for a free software that can be use to record videos and click pictures.
...yeah the on/off button is a little to the right and below the "emachines" logo under the screen, it should be a silver color... there was a review on it on youtube here, right after he talks about the webcam he shows you where the button is:
