SORRY SPRINT1980, I DIDN'T GIVE YOU ENOUGH INFO. I HAVE THE WHITE PLATTEN REMOVED AND AM LOOKING FOR A LIGHT TO COME ON IN THE LID DURING A SCAN CYCLE.

yOU HELPED DLBENNS WITH A SIMPLE YES. DIDN'T WANT TO TEAR THE LID APART BEFORE KNOWING A LITTLE.

HAS ANYONE EVER SERVICED THIS LIGHT IN THE LID?

  • rosspete Feb 25, 2009

After scanning about 500 35mm slides with this scanner the light source in the lid died. I removed the grey cover on the undersurface of the scanner lid (6 Philips head screws). The light source appears to be contained in a white rectangular box that clips into a compartment on the moving carriage. It can be gently levered out of this compartment to view the underside but, it seems, it cannot be detatched from the wiring to the lamp itself. A sealed unit in fact. There is a label with a bar code on the white box which I asume is a part number - on mine: M08506054132 . I took the scanner to the local Canon service agent. They have called to tell me Canon say this part cannot be serviced or replaced. The rest of the function of the scanner works around the main lamp and it's fuction is unaffected by this problem. Only the scanner's ability to scan transperencies is defective. But that was an important function in deciding my purchase of this scanner so I would like it rectfied if possible. This is an excellent scanner and is too expensive a purchase to be a throw away. Anyone help? Ross

Please see my other postings (wireguy) regarding this same problem. It's caused by a faulty FAU cable.

Thanks Wireguy, I guess this confirms what the Canon agent and Canon Australia told me, but I just hoped some-one had outwitted them and fixed this problem. So yes, its off to the scanner shop or maybe I'll get lucky and someone will sell one on Ebay. Thanks for your advice. Cheers, Ross

If you open the top..you see where the whiteis on the top of the lid. If it is pointing straight up and down, at the top of the lid there is a black tab to allow you to remove the white backing. That is used just for scanning regular items like documents and photos. To scan the film or slides this must be removed. Once it is you will see the lighting that is used for the film. Hope this helps

My canoscan 8400F suddenly stopped working last week. I had been scanning slides thru Photoshop when on my next scan attempt, I got this message: Cannon scan for these reasons: -The original may not...

You have to remove the white protective sheet from the the lid. Once you remove it you will be able to scan film. Also make sure the lock button is not in the lock position.

Open the Canoscan Toolbox.
Click the Save option.
Put a check in the box that states "Display the Scanner Driver".
Click Scan.
Click the Advanced Mode tab.
Make sure Select Source is set to "Platen".
Click the Preview button at the top left

Another thing is this can be caused by a faulty FAU cable. One or more of the eight wires within this cable has fractured

The light on the lid, for scanning negatives won't move

You will most likely find that the FAU cable that connects the lift up lid part to the lower part of the scanner has at least one fractured wire within it. There are eight quite fine wires and the constant opening and closing of the lid has caused this to occur. Unless you have some micro-surgery skills and a small soldering iron it's off to the scanner shop, I'm afraid.

You will most likely find that the FAU (what the hell is FAU?!) cable that connects the lift-up lid to the lower part of the scanner has at least one of the eight wires within it fractured. This cable was made far too rigid to cope with the multiple number of times that you will be opening and closing the lid and it's a poor do from Canon that they allowed this to get through to production. I tried to obtain a replacement cable from the UK Canon service agents but was told, as expected, that it couldn't supply it. If you're a dab hand with small wires and a soldering iron, it's quite possible to make a repair and save a bit more of the world's resources from going in the dustbin and then buying another equally poorly made, expensive piece of ****, from China.

No option to scan Film Negatives

In order to see these options, you must have the Film Adapter Unit (FAU) attached to the scanner. The FAU is designed to scan in 35mm film, either positive or negative. The scanner has no options to scan in mounted 35mm slides.

Does the scanner work for scanning at all? If not, you may have a communication problem between the computer and the scanner, i.e., the computer doesn't know how the scanner is configured so it doesn't show the options. If it's a communication problem, check for any other USB devices that might interfere with communication. Especially, some printers seem to take over communications. Try disconnecting all other USB devices (except keyboard, mouse, etc.), reboot, and see if the situation corrects itself.

Also, try the online troubleshooting database for this model at this link.

Cannot select Negative film source

If you're using Mac OS X 10.5.x, you definitely need a new driver. Download here.

For Mac or Windows, if film is not an option in the dropdown, then most likely the Film Adapter Unit (Scanner Lid) is not being detected. Check the connection on the back. Make sure the cable going from the lid to the base of the scanner is secure.

This is caused by a faulty FAU cable. One, or more, of the eight wires within this cable has fractured and unless you are handy with fine wires and a soldering iron, it's off to the scanner shop, I'm afraid.

Cannot scan film and slides

Check the cable that connects to the lid of the scanner. If it is disconnected, you won't get the Film options.

Selection menu doesn't give "color positive slide"

Check the cable connection to the lid of the scanner. If this is loose, then you will only get the "Platen" option in the drop down menu.
