Acer Aspire One - Time settings

I have a Canadian version of the Acer Aspire and since new it has never been able to hold the correct date and time. no matter how many times we reset it, it just loses days. we have tried syncing it with the internet but this does not work either. Also, its 8 weeks old and now the fan is starting to make a noise.

Its running Windows XP.

Sounds like the small penny size battery that connects to the motherboard may be faulty which is why it may not be keeping the date and time. Try going into the BIOS of the laptop and set the time there and save the settings to see if that solves that. If it doesn't then its the small battery.

If the fan is starting to make noises, make sure there is no debris in the fan.

That is the fan that goes on top of the CPU. If there is no debris in there then the fan is faulty.

Tip

How to replace the CMOS battery in an Acer Aspire laptop.

General info
All laptops have a CMOS battery. The main purpose for the CMOS battery is to store the system time, date and BIOS settings even if the computer is turned off or the main battery dies. Individual Acer Aspire laptop models differ somewhat, but the general steps are the same when replacing a dead CMOS battery.

Before you start
1) Read through the owner's manual for your particular Acer Aspire laptop to determine what kind of CMOS battery you need.
2) Purchase the battery through Acer or a local or online computer parts dealer.
3) Turn the laptop off and unplug it. Also unplug any external hard drives, cameras, or other external devices.
4) Turn the laptop over (bottom facing up), then touch something metal to remove static charge.

Removal of the CMOS battery
Remove the Phillips screws that secure the motherboard cover (refer to your owner's manual if necessary), then release the cover from the clips on the bottom of the plastic casing. Lay the cover aside then locate the CMOS battery cable on the right side of the motherboard. Unplug the cable then remove the battery.

The battery should look something like this

slasher_x_2.gif
Plugging the new battery in
Plug the new CMOS battery cable into the motherboard. Slide the battery partially under the laptop casing (somewhere to hold it in place), then align the cover with the slots on the bottom of the laptop housing. Replace the screws then turn the laptop back over.

Finalizing
1) Turn the laptop on.
2)Enter your BIOS (usually by pressing the "Delete" key) before the operating system loads.
3) Follow the BIOS prompts or refer to your Acer Aspire owner's manual to reset your time, date and desired system settings.

Reason: Anytime the CMOS battery is unplugged for more than a few seconds your BIOS will be reset to the default manufacturer settings. If you make any changes to the BIOS that cause problems with your Acer Aspire, unplug the CMOS battery for 3 to 5 seconds to correct the problem.

The system clock will not stay set, when I turn off laptop the clock stops and calendar stops . I reset it every time I turn it back on so I receive all up to date updates . Windows updates are set to ...

You need to set the correct date and time in your system BIOS. To access that you need to press the correct key when the computer is first booted (usually DEL or F10/F2/F11).
Most computers will have a message stating press xx Key to enter setup or etc.
If this problem persists even after setting the correct time in your BIOS, your laptop needs a new CMOS battery. I recommend having a professional do this.

Hey, I've just been having this problem. Try pressing CTRL + SHIFT + FN all at the same time. I found out that I had to press them once to turn on the green keys, and then press them twice more to turn it off. I hope that works for you.

I have an acer 3680 that goes from windows recovery mode screen to black screen

Is it shots down? Or just stays in this stage?? If does it, You may have another partition on disk that you need to remove. Bios check up. CMOS time check up also important, so access the Bios check this issue first any recovery. If your date and time is not set correctly, Recovey trying to fine the date which will never finished.

That's weird. can you check that you have the proper timezone settings under "date/time settings" and that your system is not automatically syncing itself through the "Internet Time" tab?

If it keeps going into setup, check that the date and time is correct, if not correct it and go to standard cmos settings menu and see if your hard disk drive is recognised, if so exit and save settings and reboot. If sends into set up again, check date and time again and if incorrect again, then the cmos battery is flat and needs replacing, if time and date is ok, then look in standard cmos settings again and look for a line reading 'Halt on all Errors', dissable this and next time it boots it should boot to the part where it gives a clue as to the fault.
