Question about Seagate Maxtor 750GB One Touch 4 Plus External 750 GB FireWire 400 Hard Drive

The device Generic volume cannot be stopped right now. Try stopping the device again later

On a USB hard drive when trying to "safely remove hardware"

Can anyone give a true way to determine why this happens... I have gone thru many answers including checking which processes may have a lock on the drive. None seem to have it... Not explorer, not recycle bin (config), not indexing, etc....
It seems to happen more when you have a NTFS hard drive than when you have a FAT32 hard drive.

Please only respond if you know what it is... No guesses

Just had it happen to me. Can't safely remove the external hard drive and it now appears empty. Don't know what to do. Didn't lose much important but, more importantly, I can't save onto it now. Maxtor 1 Touch 4 Plus 1TB external Drive - When trying to disconnect get message "The device generic volume cannot be stopped right ow. Try stopping the device again later."
Have done the recycle bin solution - still getting message
Done the Use third party "process explorer" to remove processes which are using the drive. No success.
All suggestions so far are unuseful. There is not "Safely remove or eject" when I right click through My Computer.
Surely someone has a simple fast solution.

Thank you. I downloaded it - it didn't find any processes so couldn't force it or shut it down. It suggested I shut the PC down and then remove it. So really no solution to problem when running the pc.

Hello marieborja10,
This happens some times when a program is accessing something on the drive. Make sure all files that were opened are closed. Also, make sure any open folders are closed.
If it still fails to eject, it is perfectly safe to pull the USB connector out as long as all programs/files/folders are closed.
Hope this helps!

You have to close all open files on that drive first - the drive cannot be stopped when there are files open on it.
Try closing all the applications that use files from that disk, and also any windows in which you see the contents of the drive.
Then try safe removal again.

Make sure you have all programs and folders closed. Then try stopping usb mass storage, there should be more then one option so try removing the drive itself on the list. If that doesn't work. I myself would probably just restart the computer. Then try again.
Thanks,
