Question about Dell Inspiron 600M Notebook

Format device when I plug a digital camera or a jumpdrive into my 600M laptop, I get a message stating the device is not formatted.

I have unistalled and reinstalled the drivers on the computer. I have downloaded and updated the drivers on the camera. I have reinstalled the programing for my jumpdrive. I can plug in my writing tablet and it works just fine. I can plug in my boyfriend's Cannon 40D camera and it will load pictures. I have tried to run it in safe mode as well. My computer did not come with a systems disc.

I went ahead and clicked yes to format both devices. It not only erases everything on the memory stick/jumpdrive, but the grey message of death comes up stating it is not able to format the device.. I am ready to pull out my hair..Thanks for the suggestions

have you installed all neccesary drivers for your laptop? like chipset driver, usb drivers etc...

right click desktop >> click properties >> hardware >> device manager.

check if you have some missing drivers found. and let us know.

Boot device not found, States install an operating system on your hard disk

Sounds like the hard drive has been formatted, and there is no operating system. You will need a installation disc for an operating system to get past this message. As it is now, your computer will not boot from the hard drive.

Computer Cannot read my SD Card

STOP SD MEMORY CARDS ARE NOT ALL THE SAME !This is a very common issue as of late because of the fairly recent addition to the market place with the "HC" and "XD" Cards. I have found most computer older than 2008 wont read HC and XD cards however I'm sure there are USB card readers that can fill this gap available at your local pc shop. Please look Carefully at these different formats Standard SD: 1 MB to 4 GB readable by almost all computers most often up to 2GB rarely up to 4GB 6468175.jpg

SDHC: 4 GB to 32 GB Most older Computers Cannot read the the HC format, good however for NEWER devices such as camera's, video cameras and recent phones (my cannon powershot S80 will NOT read HC format, nor will my 2007 laptop.)

SDXC: 32 GB to 2 TiB same limitations as above, Great cards for Digital Video Camera though!

here is a wikipedia note "Changes to the interface of the established format have made some older devices designed for standard SD cards (≤4 GB) unable to handle newer formats such as SDHC (≥4 GB). All SD cards have the same physical shape, which causes confusion for many consumers"
So.. in closing MAKE SURE your device supports HC and or XC before your purchase one! Also be aware that most of these cards have a lock switch on them to write protect the data, located on the side of the card. It MUST be in the Unlocked position to operate normally. Hope this helps someone out there. please use the thumbs up if it clears up anything for you! Gurvy

You need to format the disk ....

The drives can be read by another computer, so the problem is most likely with OS/drivers on the HP giving the error. The specific drivers required to read each drive format could be missing/corrupt. Formatting shouldn't be performed on a drive that contains data unless backed up (redundantly). It may be possible to recover any lost data using free recovery software. Often a format preserves data, erases only the file directory.

I would try a system restore on the HP. If that fails to correct it install or upgrade format specific drivers (e.g. SD/SDXC drivers). Contact Magellan about the GPS: you may have formatted the device's system partition. It is unlikely your computer had the correct drivers to format that device, and it is likely formatted in an incompatible format (such as NTFS). Does Magellan provide a utility to read the device's memory? The SD card should be salvageable by formatting on another computer using the appropriate formatting utility. (Go to https://www.sdcard.org and navigate to their formatting utility.)

From that site: "If an SDXC memory card is used through the direct SD slot of a computer without SDXC driver installation, the card may not be recognized correctly and a message to prompt formatting may appear. In this case, do not format the SDXC memory card. It may erase the data on the SDXC memory card and format the card for a different file system, making it incompatible with SDXC devices."

Format

Hi

two options

  1. The original restore dvd / cd can be used to format and restore the computer to the original state it came on.
  2. Use the windows installation cd, format the hard drive during the setup and then continue with installing windows, at the end you will need the device drivers and those are available at http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/downloads.html
