Best Soundcard for RMAA Measurements?

By Peter1 - usenet poster

Hi, all. I'm new to the group. I have designed a D/A converter, and
I've been thinking about how to go about doing measurements on the
analog (single-ended) RCA output. I will probably use the RMAA
software (you know, because it's free). So, I'm trying to figure out
what soundcard (preferably USB, but internal PCI, if that's better)
would be good for doing these types of measurements. Clearly, I don't
want the soundcard A/D to be the limiting factor, in terms of S/N,
DNR, THD, etc. I figure you guys must have some suggestions for me.
I've looked at E-MU 1212M (seems ideal, except has balanced inputs)
and 0404 USB, M-Audio 2496 and USB Audiophile, Onkyo PCI-SE200, and
some others. It's hard to know what it the best value/performance.
Thanks, in advance, for comments.

Using the 1212m as a comparitor/test is a good choice as it has the highest S/N Ratio (120db) on the market. I was attracted to the card(s) because they have the same converter chips as the DigiDesign HD Pro systems (WOW) >and less than the $10,000 to over $150,00 price tag of the DD HD Pro Stuff. But I would not modify the 1212m> use it as a test/monitor instrument. I would use a top notch DVD Player and swap out the chips> if you want to test a UNBALANCED source. And I'd find a Pro (ie: BALANCED) CD, DVD or standalone converter to swap out the chips for a balanced source.

There are plenty of "low" and "medium" end A/D converters around. Why
design one more? I take it this is an experiment or learning
experience and not a real audio/musical product.

I don't remember saying "high-end".

Although you probably can't test every aspect of your DAC with a
Pro-sumer sound card, there is plenty you can do, simply by making an
LC notch filter and attenuating the main signal. Drop it by 20dB, and
virtually any 24 bit sound card will yield information about spurious
outputs right down to the noise. That should be a relatively trivial
task.

Then hire the expensive stuff for no more than a day or so to do the
trickiest measurements.

If it's a high end D/A why are you using an single ended RCA output ?

Thanks, I think you're right. I may not be able to afford it, but
either way, the "prosumer" soundcards probably aren't good enough for
what I want to do.

You need something that is an order of magnitude more accurate than
the DAC you are measuring. I assume your DAC is very clean... if it
isn't, there probably isn't any sense in building it in a world of
cheap soundcards. So this means you need a test rig with converters
that are even more clean.

I think you need to bite the bullet and borrow an Audio Precision testset.
