Hi, welcome to fixya. Color coding is not universal so we can't go strictly by that. You want to look at the top of the run capacitor and connect the two leads to the terminals marked C or common and the one marked comp. Be sure not to connect to the terminal marked F or fan. hard to say as it varies from manufactures. their is normally only 1 wire on connector marked HERM ( MOST LIKELY THE BLUE) AND THE OTHERS TO THE "C" for common. Does capacitor have 2 or 3 posts for connections ?
You are talking about a three post capacitor. One post may have 2 or 3 prongs, but it is still the same post and it doesn't matter which prong you put it on as long as your are on the right post. I am going to try and send you a video of a three post capacitor hoping it will help you. One post is for the "fan" whiich, by what you are telling me is the blue wire. "fan" will be marked right on the top of the capacitor next to the post. Sounds like the Red is "herm" which is a compressor wire. Orange and Yellow are the "C" wires. One wire will go to the fan and one will go to the compressor. Again,, It doesn't matter which spade or "prong" you are putting it on as long as you are on the herm, c or fan post. hope this helps.
Hello, Typically your common wire will be white, high speed- black, medium speed- yellow, medium low-blue, red- low. The motor could still run for a short time if it was wired wrong but will either trip a breaker or go off on it;s overload when it's gets hot.
Before attempting any of these recommendations, First disconnect all the power sources and check your wiring diagrams on the motor and condensing unit.
On the old capacitor if you look on the top near each of the three terminals. Are they marked, fan - C - herm? If they are that is a dual capacitor and that needs to stay because that is also your compressor capacitor.
The Red wire from the conductor is Run and it's connected to C on the old capacitor.
Follow the Yellow wire and see if it goes to the S or start terminal on the compressor, if it does then that is the Start wire for your compressor and it connects to herm on the capacitor.
For the fan motor a lot of times the wiring connections are printed on the motor label.
Check the label, Purple should be run and connect to C on the old capacitor.
Black should be Common and it connects to the opposite side of the contactor as the Red wire. If the Red wire connects to T1 then the Black wire connects to T2.
The Brown wire shoud be the start wire on the fan motor and it connects to the Fan terminal on the old capacitor.
Now if you want to use the new fan capacitor. Take the Purple wire from the motor and look for any marks (red paint or a dash) on or beside the terminals on the new capacitor. If there is an identifying mark then connect the Purple wire to that terminal, if no marks you can connect it to either terminal. Then you need a jumper wire from C on the old capacitor to the purple side of the new capacitor. Then take the brown wire and connect it to opposite terminal of the new capacitor.
Brown wire is Start
Yellow wire is run or Power
Black wire is High Speed or Common
The other two taps are speed taps, but you have a single speed application
And high speed is what you need ,that’s why there’s not any wires
on Red and Blue if high speed was to much then you would move the
Black wire to one of the other taps RED low speed or Blue Medinm speed
White goes to the Yellow wire from the capacitor
Black goes to the Black wire you took off of high speed on old motor
Of course both Brown wires go to the capacitor and Green to ground
If a capacitor doesn’t discharge it doesn’t mean it’s bad
but the capacitors don’t last as long as they used.
Any time you put in a new motor always replace the capacitor
It will save you a lot of time and grief later on.
If you know the motor brand you could call a local motor repair shop and they are usually glad to help. A lot of motors are usually color coded with red wire low speed and black as high speed and on 230 volt motors Red and Black wires are usually L1 and L2 so I'm unsure as to which wires go where and what the voltage is. If you know for sure this is a permanent split capacitor motor then you should be able to ohm it out. start and run would be the total sum of Common to run and common to start.
Do you have an Ohmmeter and do you know how to use one?
For instance by ohming it out if (yellow to red was 5.0 ohms start to run) and (black to red was 1.8 ohms common to run) and (black to yellow was 3.2 ohms common to start), that would mean (yellow to the start side of capacitor) and (red to the run or other side of capacitor and jumper from red to L2) (some capacitors you can wire any way no identified terminal) and (black to L2 or common).
i have some procedure in troubleshooting a ref., as follows:
1. check if the compressor will run when you plug the ref in the outlet/power.
a. if the compressor run and it will not produce the cold or heat. then the problem is, the system of your ref. has a leak. it lost all the freon charge into the system. find a near service center in your area.
b. if the compressor run and it stop. unplug your ref. from power.
check the capacitor if it is ok, using a multi tester. by determining a good capacitor in resistance test at 100 kilo ohms or 10 kilo ohms the pointer will deflect to right and it will slowly going to left or a higher rating. bad ca[pacitor pointer steady in zero position or infinite.
but if the capacitor is ok then some trouble in mechanical parts inside the compressor. specially when you turn on your ref. you feel some surge power from the case of the ref. find a near service center in your area. if you need to replace the compressor and some parts of it.
c. if the compressor will not run, unplug your ref from power and then check the follow:
check the compressor resistance by using a multi tester, open the terminal box of the compressor. have some checklist in the terminal setting that has a letter symbol R (running) connected to what color of wire, same also with S (start) and C (capacitor) check in its terminal resistance.
