I'd appreciate some advice on diagnosing the problem stated in the subject line. That is, very occasionally, I switch my PC on, the fans all start up, the hard disc light is on continuously but we don't get to POST and the monitor does not awake from its power saving state.
If I switch the machine off (by holiding down the power on button for 5 secs) and then switch it on again it normally boots up fine, and works very reliably.
Any ideas?
I can supply a list of my main components if this would help, but suffice to say I believe they are decent quality and based around an Athlon XP2200+. The mobo is Jetway V333U. I've checked all the components are well seated.
Many thanks for the response. The noise is exactly the same as when the computer is running normally. It definitely isn't the cpu fan / bios check as I have specifically disabled it in the bios as I am powering the cpu fan from a Nexus fan controller, not from the socket on the mobo. Temps etc. are just fine, so although I believe this is not recommended it works fine for me.
All the best,
Pete

Hi,
Here are my psu and computer specs. as requested:
PSU: Nexsus Real Silent 350Watt Power Supply Unit (see #). According to the Winbond Hardware Doctor Version 3.3 monitoring software while the PC is running I am getting the folowing voltages:
(I appreciate that measuring while the computer is on OK and via mobo sensors / software is not ideal but it's the best I can do at the moment!)
This PSU is less than a year old. I do admit to one non-standard practice, and that is I am powering the cpu fan from a Nexus multi-fan controller rather than from the connection on the motherboard. I have set the Bios correctly so that this does not prevent boot ups and the computer runs fine / nice and cool in this setup.
As ever, I cannot exactly remember the first time the problem occurred, but the biggest recent change to the computer was the graphics card update. But as I said in an earlier post, the card fan is clearly on at normal power when the computer goes into the won't start state.
Finally, here is my full spec. Apologies for the detail, but I hope it's what you were looking for. Many thanks for taking the time to respond.

You haven't said what the noise sounds like. If it is like a two tone security horn the problem may be the CPU fan not spinning up quickly enough. Just sufficiently sluggish to trip the alarm at first start but then quick enough after the false start to be OK next time!
