Uneven Doors for KitchenAid Refrigerator

Our new KitchenAid side-by-side freezer door is higher than the refrigerator door by 3/8"+ at the center, but can't get them level. The service technician would like to use sealer gum sticking in gasket to increase the thickness of refrigerator door ( 23" x 72"). Will this remedy cause gasket to be easily torn apart because of adding the weight of sealer gum (4-1/8" x 1" x 5/8" each piece)? Also, air leaking might be caused after continuous using... Check the lower mount bushing. These are nylon and wear/break easily.

SAFELY REMOVING DOORS FOR SHIPPING

Good Morning Jill,

I see that you are trying to remove the doors on your Frigidaire refrigerator, model# FRS23R4A, for shipping purposes. Below are the instructions you will need to follow for both the refrigerator and freezer doors.

DOOR REMOVAL INSTRUCTIONS:
If it is necessary to move the refrigerator through narrow doorways, follow these steps to remove the doors.
IMPORTANT: Before you begin, turn your freezer and fresh food controls to "O" and remove electrical power cord from the wall outlet. Remove any food from the door shelves.

1. Disconnect electrical supply.
2. Open both doors, then remove toe grille.
3. Close doors.

To Remove Refrigerator Door:

1. Remove top hinge cover screw on refrigerator door and remove cover.
2. Trace around hinge with soft lead pencil. This will make it easier to realign doors when they are replaced.
3. Remove top hinge and lift refrigerator door off bottom hinge pin. Set door aside.
4. Remove bottom hinge, if necessary.
5. Reverse this procedure to reinstall refrigerator door.

To Remove Freezer Door:

1. Disconnect water line coming from lower hinge of freezer door at connection located under front of freezer: Press outer ring against face of fitting, then pull to remove tube.
2. Remove top hinge cover screw on freezer door and remove cover.
3. Disconnect wiring harness connector plug at top hinge: place your thumbs on flat sides of each connector and bend both parts back and forth, then with firm grasp, pull both pieces apart.
4. Trace around hinge with soft lead pencil. This will make it easier to realign doors when they are replaced.
5. Remove top hinge, allowing wiring harness to pull through hinge and lift freezer door off of bottom hinge pin. Lay door down flat to avoid kinking water line.
6. Remove bottom hinge, if necessary.
7. Reverse this procedure to reinstall freezer door.

When both doors have been reinstalled, connect water line by inserting tube and push until mark touches face of fitting, replace toe grille and plug in electrical power cord. Turn both temperature controls to center position. Adjust settings as necessary. Hope this is helpful.

-Best Regards-

Freezer door does'nt shut all the way

If you notice one side of your Maytag side-by-side refrigerator is significantly higher than the other, you might want to raise or lower one of the doors. The refrigerator door is configured at the factory to be slightly higher than the freezer door. The weight of items on the door shelves sometimes cause the doors to sag slightly inward. Making a small adjustment to the freezer door leveling screws will correct minor amounts of sagging.
Things You'll Need3/8-inch hex head screwdriver 1
Position the refrigerator in the place you plan to keep it, and make sure the refrigerator is level front to back and side to side with a spirit level.

  • 2 Remove the base grille, located below the doors, by pulling from the sides. The leveling screws will be visible when the grille is removed.

I have a KSSC48QMSO1, The center panel, that divides the freezer from the refrigerator is hot to the touch at the top end and only where the side doors close together. Also the refrigerator is not holding...

could be a problem with a dirty condenser or your condenser fan may be no good. That will cause the center panel to be hot and will prevent the refrigerator from cooling properly. Is the sides of the fridge hot to the touch as well?

Doors are not even across the top

Is this a new problem? Or have the doors always been uneven?

Is your floor level? A tilting floor can make an appliance look uneven. Even if you assume your floor is level, it might be worth checking. Floors can change over time.

Is one door level but the other out of plumb? If so, the problem could be the hinges on the uneven door. This could be caused, for example, by overloading the door trays. One of the hinges could have become bent or damaged. If this is the case, it should be replaced. Check all the hinges carefully for signs of damage or wear. If both doors are out of plumb, it's possible that both doors have damaged hinges.

Another question is: just how uneven are they? Are they uneven by less than 3 millimetres? Or more than 2 centimetres? Obviously the bigger the unevenness the more likely you will need to get it fixed. But if it's tiny, it might be just cosmetic and unless it really bothers you it could be left alone.

I hope that helps a bit. Good luck!

    Panel between doors is hot

Many models of refrigerators have a heating element around where the gasket seals to the fridge. This is to prevent ice buildup around the doors that would prevent the doors from closing all the way.
If you haven't noticed any other problems with the cooling of your unit, you're refrigerator is running exactly the way it was designed.

Fridge door is lower then freezer door

The #1 cause for this problem: The floor beneath the fridge is uneven, causing the refrigerator "box" to be out of square. Adjust the levelers on the fridge bottom to compensate for the uneven floor. That should do it.

    Warm refrigerator

    Check the freezer fan.
    Is it running?
    If not, replace fan motor.
Check the damper doors in the fresh food side.
    Does air flow through?

How do you level the kitechenaid side by side

Hope this helps solve your problem, Let me know. Thanks, Sea Breeze

This happens because the refrigerators of today are air tight, the fresh food door pushes the air into the cabinet as it closes and the air has no place to go but up the air vent into the freezer and "pops" open the freezer door. First thing is make sure the freezer door is capable of closing properly and is not rubbing or catching anywhere. I sometimes add a washer or 2 to the center hinge under the freezer door so it doesn't rub anything. Put a little Vaseline ( or food grade silicone lubricant ) on the hinge side of the seal. I then raise the front of the refrigerator so that the front of the refrigerator is a little higher than the back of the refrigerator. Never level a fridge with a level. Once you have the door closing properly and front slightly higher than the back...let the fresh food door close from 90 degrees on it's own and the freezer door may "pop" open a little but will close again on it's own...and stay closed once all is set up properly. We see this more often now and have no trouble with the door staying open again after setting up the refrigerator properly.
