GE Freezer  14.8 Cu. Ft. Manual Defrost Chest Freezer

Q: Making a GE freezer colder

By Phoebe - usenet poster

For the past few days my freezer hasn't been as cold as it used to be, so I am
hoping someone can tell me whether I have to raise the temperature in the
refrigerator to make the freezer colder. I can only find a dial to adjust the
temperature in the refrigerator, so this begs the Question: Is the dial in the
refrigerator for both the refrigerator AND the freezer? I don't have an
instruction manual. It's a General Electric, if that matters. I raised the
number on the dial inside the refrigerator to "6" around ten minutes ago, so do
I just have to wait?? Thanks so much.

Thanks everbody. I set the dial on "7" which is higher than it's supposed to
be, and everything is back to normal on that setting. If I remember right, the
refrigerator food would freeze when it was set at "6" but so far it's working
like when it was set on "5."

If it only has one dial, then yes.

At least 12 hours before you may notice a difference but that might
not be the cause of your temperature problem. You can read about
setting the controls on refrigerators at the following link:

If your model has a condenser fan (by the compressor), the condenser
(hot part) itself may be plugged with dust and dirt and/or pet hairs
causing the fridge to no longer operate properly. In that case
cleaning the condenser will allow the fridge to cool better.

Also, if your fridge is a frost free model (usually with a fan in the
freezer), there may be a problem in the defrost system in which case
the fridge will eventually stop cooling altogether. You can read other
possible causes for the fridge getting warm at the following link:

Hi,

No model# posted.

Model# helps.

Normally yes...a higher number is colder, lower number is warmer. If
your refrigerator only has one dial/control, it should control both
sections. Should wait 12-24 hours after a control change to notice any
changes.

Yes you can, but that will not fix the problem. If the freezer has been OK
all along, but now had gotten warmer, you have another problem.

Most likely, the fan between the freezer and the refrigerator compartment h
as died. This is very common. It will still work, but most of the time the
freezer is not cold enough.

If it is a top freezer model, the fan is usuallylocated behind the back
panel of the freezer. Take everything out, remove the back panel, and see
if the fan operates while the compressor is running. You can lubricate it
and get another week or two out of it, but it will fail again. Just replace
it and be done with it. Last one I bought was about $20.

Sounds more like either the timer motor or the defrost heaters have
quit on you. You will in all likelyhood have to call in a pro for the
repairs.

I meant to raise the *dial* in the refrigerator, not the temperature. I got
confused because I raised the dial in the refrigerator from "5" to "6" around
20 minutes ago to try and make the freezer colder.
